A biographical feature film about American pop star Britney Spears is in early development in Hollywood, with screenwriter Elizabeth Meriwether confirming that work on the script is officially underway.
Filmmaker Jon M. Chu, the director behind the screen adaptation of the musical Wicked, has joined the project to direct the feature. The film adaptation comes after Hollywood studios moved to secure the screen rights following the commercial success of Spears' bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me, and the announcement of her upcoming photography collection, A Visual Celebration.
Meriwether, creator of the television comedy series New Girl and the Emmy-nominated drama miniseries The Dropout, shared the first details of the production during an interview with People magazine. She stated that the present moment is ideal for reflecting on the life and career of the performer widely celebrated as the princess of pop.

The filmmaking team intends to approach Spears' story from a mature and empathetic perspective, steering clear of past media prejudices to do justice to an artist who shaped the musical sound and visual aesthetic of a generation.
