Camouflage print is making a comeback in fashion for 2026, but this time with one firm rule: it should not look military.
For years the pattern was tied to military uniforms, streetwear and the early-2000s look. Now it is emerging as one of the prints set to dominate fashion in 2026 and is expected to keep its momentum through the rest of the year. It has already appeared on cargo trousers and straight-cut designs during Copenhagen Fashion Week, one of the industry's most closely watched showcases for street style and emerging trends.
From military necessity to fashion statement
Camouflage was originally created for a purely practical reason: to make soldiers harder to see. Fashion, however, had other plans for it. Designer Elsa Schiaparelli, known for her surrealist approach to clothing, used the print in a collection back in 1940. Decades later it resurfaced through 1990s streetwear and the Y2K aesthetic that dominated early-2000s style.
Its current return is arriving alongside another major shift toward everyday, utilitarian clothing. Uniform-inspired jackets, oversized pockets and cargo trousers are all gaining ground this season as part of the same broader trend.
Trousers are camouflage's favorite piece
This time around, camouflage print is showing up mostly below the waist. Cargo trousers are among the easiest versions to spot, but the print is also appearing on bermuda shorts, jorts and straight-leg trousers. It has even turned up on capri trousers, a sign the pattern is moving beyond its usual silhouettes and into less expected pieces.
How to wear camouflage without looking military
The key to pulling it off is contrast. Rather than combining several camouflage pieces at once, the print works better when paired with items from a completely different style universe, something far removed from military dressing.
On the streets outside Copenhagen Fashion Week, camouflage has been styled with toe-post sandals, printed T-shirts and layered garments. For the in-between weather of late summer and early autumn, it has also been mixed with checked shirts and high-neck jackets, softening the look further.
From uniform to wardrobe staple
There is no need to build an entire outfit around a military look, and that is exactly the shift fashion is making with this print. Camouflage is coming back as a piece used for contrast rather than as a nod to its original purpose.
After polka dots, animal print and stripes each had their turn, fashion is now reviving another familiar pattern. The difference this time, according to the trend, is that camouflage is being worn in a way designed to make people forget what it was originally created for.
