Amazon Prime Video released the first trailer for Carrie on Wednesday, September 9, debuting the upcoming eight-episode television series based on Stephen King's novel.
The streaming service confirmed that all eight episodes of the horror adaptation will premiere globally on October 7.
Described as a bold and modern reinvention of the classic coming-of-age story, the series centers on Carrie White, an awkward high school student who has spent her life hidden inside her home under the care of her overprotective mother, Margaret.
Following the sudden and premature death of her father, Carrie is thrust into the unsparing environment of a public high school. She is forced to deal with a viral bullying scandal in her community, the pressure and cruelty of the social media era, and the sudden awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that emerge alongside her adolescence.
Cast and production team
Canadian actress Summer H. Howell stars in the title role as Carrie White. Howell secured the part following an extensive open casting process that evaluated more than 1,000 candidate actresses. Samantha Sloyan co-stars as Carrie's mother, Margaret White.
The supporting cast features several performers who have previously starred in projects directed by filmmaker Mike Flanagan. The cast includes Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, and Danielle Klaudt.
Trucco previously appeared in Flanagan's 2016 home-invasion thriller Hush, while Klaudt featured in the 2023 miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher. Kohli has established himself as a frequent collaborator, starring in three of Flanagan's television projects: The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020, Midnight Mass in 2021, and The Fall of the House of Usher in 2023.
Flanagan serves as executive producer for the series alongside producer Trevor Macy under their production banner Intrepid Pictures. Formed in 2004, Intrepid Pictures has produced numerous horror and thriller feature films and high-profile streaming television series.
Stephen King source material and legacy
The project represents Flanagan's latest work adapting Stephen King's literary catalogue. The director previously helmed the 2017 film adaptation of King's thriller Gerald's Game and the 2019 feature Doctor Sleep, a sequel to King's horror novel The Shining. Flanagan gained widespread acclaim as a television creator through his hit horror series The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass.
Published in 1974, Carrie was Stephen King's first published novel. King, a former high school teacher, wrote the supernatural story about an outcast teenage girl who uses telekinesis against her bullies. The book launched King's career as one of the world's most prolific and celebrated horror authors, whose works have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.
King's debut novel has seen multiple adaptations across film, television, and theatre over the past five decades. Its most famous screen version remains the iconic film directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek, which earned widespread critical acclaim and two Academy Award nominations following its release.
The new eight-episode series will launch globally on Prime Video on October 7.
