Cast iron skillets cleaned with baking soda and mustard

A combination of baking soda and dry mustard powder removes thick carbon buildup from cast iron skillets without damaging their non-stick coating.

Cast iron skillets cleaned with baking soda and mustard

Cast iron skillets with heavy carbon buildup can be cleaned effectively using a mixture of baking soda and dry mustard powder boiled on the stove. The simple two-ingredient method removes years of stubborn grease without relying on harsh chemical cleaners or aggressive commercial products.

Baking soda works as a gentle abrasive to loosen burnt residue without scratching metal, while dry mustard powder breaks down accumulated fat. Together, the two common pantry staples transform hardened deposits into a soft paste that rinses away easily.

To clean a pan, two tablespoons of baking soda are mixed with one tablespoon of dry mustard powder directly inside the cookware. Hot water is added and stirred until the ingredients form a thick paste across the problem areas before placing the pan over medium heat.

Once the mixture comes to a boil, it is left to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. This heating process softens the fat and causes the stubborn layer of carbon to separate from the iron surface. After boiling, the liquid is drained, the pan is rinsed with hot water, and remaining residue is wiped away with a soft sponge.

Restoring the non-stick seasoning on cast iron

After cleaning, recommendations state that the pan should be heated on the stove with a small amount of cooking oil to restore its non-stick layer. Cast iron relies on a process called seasoning, where oil creates a smooth, protective polymer barrier over the metal.

Acidic cleaning solutions and metal scrubbers should be avoided on cast iron because they strip away this protective film. In contrast, the combination of baking soda and mustard powder cleans the pan safely in 10 minutes on the stove.

Cast iron skillets are prized in home cooking for their durability and superior heat retention. With proper care and gentle cleaning methods, well-maintained cast iron cookware can remain functional for decades.
