BBC entertainment chief Ed Havard has revealed that the upcoming series of Celebrity Traitors will feature tears and unprecedented paranoia among its famous contestants. Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, Havard teased never-before-seen twists that pushed the star-studded cast to their emotional limits.
The reality competition show, filmed at the Chapel of St John the Baptist at Ardross Castle in Scotland, tasks designated faithfuls with unmasking secret traitors before they are eliminated from the game.
Havard told festival attendees yesterday that the line-up of celebrities took the competition far more seriously than producers anticipated. "The thing about this season is, things happen that you didn't think could happen on Traitors," Havard said. "The paranoia is off the scale. I really wanted to step in and go, 'no one is actually being murdered.'"
The executive confirmed that the pressure led to genuine breakdowns during production. "I don't want to give too much away, but there are tears in this series," he added. Host Claudia Winkleman returns to lead the series, appearing in yesterday's trailer flamboyantly dressed in a white ruffled shirt and black suit. Her return comes fresh from news that her BBC chatshow has been cancelled after just one series.
High paranoia in the Scottish highlands
In the newly released trailer, the downcast competitors looked decidedly stony-faced and failed to raise a single smile while listening to Winkleman from the chapel pews. Addressing the group as they shivered in the Scottish chapel, Winkleman called for "a moment of silence for the celebrities gathered today." The stars looked worlds away from their usual showbiz day jobs as the reality of the game set in.
The Traitors has emerged as a major television hit for the BBC, adapting the Dutch format De Verraders into a high-stakes psychological game. Ardross Castle, a 19th-century estate set within 100 acres of parkland north of Inverness, provides the show with its signature Gothic atmosphere.
Oscar nominees and chart-toppers join cast
This year's contestant roster features high-profile figures across film, television, music, and comedy. Among those taking part are Oscar-nominated actor Richard E Grant, Welsh actor Michael Sheen, comedian Miranda Hart, and former supermodel Jerry Hall. Former EastEnders actor and documentary maker Ross Kemp, Love Island presenter Maya Jama, and University Challenge host Amol Rajan also join the cast.
The music industry is represented by singer-songwriter James Blunt and former Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock. The acting contingent includes Bella Ramsey, best known for starring in The Last of Us, former Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh, My Mad Fat Diary star Sharon Rooney, Industry actress Myha'la, and Heartstopper actor and musician Sebastian Croft.
A strong comedy line-up features Romesh Ranganathan, Joe Lycett, Joanne McNally, James Acaster, and Rob Beckett. The 21-member roster is completed by content creator King Kenny and mathematician Professor Hannah Fry.
