Actress Bella Ramsey, who played the character Ellie in the series “The Last of Us”, has sent a message to internet trolls who have complained about the LGBTQIA+ themes presented in the series: “Get used to it”.
Ramsey’s speech was a response to a recent case, when a group of so-called “fans” of the game, which originated the attraction, bombarded the IMDb site with negative reviews of the 3rd episode of the series, about the same-sex relationship between the characters Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett).
In an interview with GQ UK magazine, the actress said that people have to get used to seeing this type of content, otherwise they won’t like the series.
He said he visited the writers room of ‘The Last of Us’ season 2 and said that the series must continue to “closely follow the storyline of the games.” This means that your character, Ellie, will most likely be in a relationship with a woman named Dina (as happens in the game).
“There are probably some parts with Ellie alone, but I like that she has it too [Dina] now,” Ramsey said of the video game sequel, “The Last of Us Part II,” which will serve as the basis for the second season of the series. The sequel also features a transgender teenager named Lev.
Anticipating a backlash from the trolls, Ramsey said she wasn’t “particularly anxious about it.” “I know people are going to think what they want to think. But they’re going to have to get used to it. If you don’t want to watch the show because it has gay stories, because it has a trans character, that’s up to you and you lose. It won’t scare me. I think it comes from a place of challenge”.
Ramsey announced in an interview with the New York Times last January that he identifies as a non-binary person. During her conversation with GQ, she revealed that her co-star, Pedro Pascal, was “super supportive” of her decision. Pascal’s sister is transgender. Ramsey said that, between takes, the two often discussed their sexual identities.
“And they haven’t always been [conversas] deep,” he said. They can be fun and entertaining, the whole spectrum. We’ve been very honest and open with each other.”
Ramsey added that he accepts all pronouns, like “she” or “elu,” but there are some descriptions he doesn’t support. “That’s what annoys me most about pronouns: being called ‘little woman’ or ‘mighty young woman’, ‘young woman’, but I’m not [isso]”, she said. “[Em] ‘Catarina, the girl called Passarinha’, I wore dresses. [Em] “Becoming Elizabeth,” I wore a corset. And I felt superpowered about it. Playing these more feminine characters is an opportunity to be something so opposite to me, and it’s really fun.”
“The Last of Us” is currently airing on HBO and HBO Max. Watch below for the trailer for the next episode, which airs Sunday (2/19).
