It Turned Out Stupid: How Ryan Gosling Got Big For The Role, But The Director Didn’t Shoot Him Because He Was Scared

42-year-old Canadian Ryan Gosling is the star of Drive, The Ides of March, Blade Runner and many more. Recently, he even played Ken, a friend of Barbie dolls – and it seems impossible to imagine a better casting for this role!

Gosling heroes are cool, fit guys with spectacular looks. However, there was a role in his career that was noticeably different from this role, and Ryan really wanted to play it, but something went wrong…

This is the film “The Lovely Bones” by Peter Jackson, released in 2009. It is a film adaptation of the rather creepy bestseller by Alice Sebold: the story is told from the point of view of the daughter Susie Salmon (one of the first roles of Saoirse Ronan), victim of a maniac, and the underworld watches how her death has changed the lives of those close to her.

Ryan Gosling has been cast as Susie’s father, Jack Salmon. After familiarizing himself with the original source and script, 26-year-old Gosling set to work with great enthusiasm. He decided that the grieving parent needed to look more mature and overweight. Therefore, he began to grow in size diligently.

Ryan later said in an interview that he had been on some sort of diet – the basis of his diet was…melted ice cream. The actor literally drizzled other high-calorie delicacies with them.

Of course, the effect did not take long to come – in a short time Gosling gained almost 28 kilograms. Moreover, he grew a beard and, deciding that he now perfectly matches the type of his character, went to meet the director.

However, Peter Jackson and the film’s producers were horrified by the eye-opening changes. Despite the fact that the appearance of chubby Gosling to people happened just before the start of filming, the direction of the film made a difficult decision – Ryan was fired.

Recall that Jackson has already achieved such a trick: on the first day of filming, he fired the interpreter from the role of Aragorn in the first film of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A similar situation happened with The Lovely Bones: the role of Jack Salmon went to Mark Wahlberg in a hurry. He did well, but, alas, was not rewarded – all the laurels, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, went to Stanley Tucci, who played the role of a cruel maniac.

And Ryan Gosling lost weight and no longer signed up for such experiments – the actor admitted that he didn’t like being “fat and unemployed”.
