The company Andrews McMeel, distributor of the “Dilbert” strips, has announced that it will end the publication of the character in the US press. The cancellation announcement came after character creator Scott Adams made racist comments.
“As a media and communications company, AMU values freedom of expression,” Hugh Andrews and Andy Sareyan, the company’s president and CEOs, said in a statement. “We are proud to promote and share many different voices and perspectives. But we will never endorse any comments rooted in discrimination or hatred. Scott Adams’ recent comments about race and race relations are not aligned with our core values as a company. “
The decision was made after some newspapers canceled the publication of the strips on their own initiative.
The controversy arose because of a live that Adams did on his YouTube channel, in which he referred to the African American population as a “hate group”. “The best advice I’d give to white people is to stay away from black people,” Adams said, speaking of researching the use of the phrase, “It’s okay to be white.”
According to the poll, 26% of African Americans disagreed with the statement and another 21% said they weren’t sure. This is a phrase that has been used by the US far right and condemned by the Anti-Defamation League.
But not only the “Dilbert” strips were canceled. The Wall Street Journal has learned that Portfolio also canceled a book by Adams, which was unrelated to his most famous character.
On his Twitter, the author posted an interview explaining his comments. “I welcome criticism from anyone who has seen the full context here. The rest of you are in a fake news bubble, but I trust you suspected it,” he wrote.
