Yanomi Campaign sends alternative trophies to Oscar nominees




An awareness campaign on the impact of illegal mining on Yanomami lands has sent an Omama statuette to 20 nominees in major Oscar categories, to be presented this Sunday (12/3) in Los Angeles, USA.

Called “The Cost Of Gold”, the campaign aims to remind that the gold used in the Oscar trophies could be responsible for the extermination of indigenous peoples in Brazil. Yanomami land is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis due to the advance of illegal mining, mainly for gold. The prospector invasion deforested and poisoned the region’s waters with mercury, resulting in the deaths of children, as well as sickening hundreds of indigenous people.

They propose a figurine of another material, like the one they sent, hoping to raise awareness among Hollywood stars to use their global influence and help the Yanomami cause and also to expose the problems gold mining can cause.

Watch the video of the campaign below, ‘shot by the DM9 advertising agency and the Urihi Associação Yanomami, represented by the junior leader Hekurari Yanomami, one of the main people responsible for denouncing to the world the health chaos experienced by indigenous peoples within the territory.

In addition to the organic figurine, the campaign includes a video showing the harmful effects of gold mining and informing that mercury, a highly toxic metal for humans and the environment, is used to extract the mineral.
