Expensive apartment and unemployment: is Friends close to real life?

During the Emmy Awards ceremony, which was held by videoconference due to the pandemic, a curious event occurred. Jennifer Aniston answered a call from host Jimmy Kimmel flanked by Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow! Let’s look at their life in the series “Friends” through the eyes of adult viewers.

Jimmy himself was very surprised that the main characters of “Friends” were in the same room. “Yes, we’ve been renting a house together since 1994!” Courtney burst out laughing. “Where can I live? Lisa supported her.

How did they live in the series

The series Friends showed a fictionalized version of life in Manhattan: they say the rent was so low that a poor 20-year-old could rent a nice apartment! Alas, that’s not the case in real life: the average price for a similar apartment in this part of New York is $4,500 a month.

It is known, however, that Monica (Courteney Cox) shared an apartment with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), which was assigned to her grandmother and paid for by her. Therefore, Monica practically did not take money from Rachel while she was not working anywhere. But it’s still unclear how the other Friends heroes paid for their accommodations.

where did they work

Remember how many times you saw your favorite characters at work? Very little! For example, Phoebe once massaged a client and Ross was seeing her boss, but it’s obvious that most of the time they didn’t do anything. Even Rachel, who worked as a waitress at a cafe, chatted with friends more often than she worked.

When you look at the series as fiction, such things are not obvious. And if you look at it in a grown-up way, how many times do you manage to see five friends without endless timing? Certainly not every day!

Chandler is an average friend

The hero Matthew Perry constantly complains about the lack of ability to communicate, like Joey. At the same time, he is a manipulator and selfish person who places casual partners above friendship. He seems to be trustworthy, but you shouldn’t be alone with him!

He once stole a girl from Joey, and in college he met a classmate who also liked Ross. And they agreed not to!

Also, Chandler is unhappy with his job and is still struggling with his parents’ divorce. Over time, he becomes psychologically more mature, but it’s not easy for him.

Ross doesn’t really like women.

At the start of the series, the character of David Schwimmer comes to his senses after a divorce. He talks badly about an ex who came out as a lesbian. From an adult’s point of view, Ross shouldn’t have attacked his wife, but supported her in her realization of her sexuality.

He also suffered a lot when it turned out that Rachel, who he was dating, had a friend at work. He must have sent her flowers to show that the place was taken. And his other girlfriend dared to shave her head, which also pissed Ross off.

Phoebe has childhood trauma

Lisa Kudrow’s heroine talks little about childhood. But it is very visible that it had a strong influence on her. She wrote songs about her mother’s suicide when she was 14 herself. She had to sleep on the streets and then enter into a relationship with an older man in order to obtain housing.

When she couldn’t live with Monica due to total control, she quietly took things out of the apartment so as not to argue. Obviously, some moments in the past have prevented her from enjoying the present.

Joey tragedy

Surely you have surprised yourself to think that it is quite possible to date the hero of Matt LeBlanc! He is a dreamer, and even almost a real actor – the most interesting work in the series. But ultimately it was he who was unhappy.

He had a good heart and even proposed marriage to Rachel in order to raise her child together. He was constantly going out on dates… and his friends had long relationships and started families. A sad, lonely future lay before him.

Monica suffers from her figure

The perfectionist Monica was overweight in school and the fear of getting fat again prevented her from living. She loved to cook, but always tried to eat well and eat less. This partly influenced his character.

At the end of the series, she was involved in a big plot – the promotion of adoption. And while it’s not a quick process at all, Monica showed it was possible and would bring joy to everyone involved. Adult act!
