How to make DIY ripped jeans

A custom jeans design will take a few hours of your time and a bit of creativity. It’s easy to breathe new life into old pants. Here is a step-by-step instruction for artistic denim cutting.

  1. First, mark the location of the future torn holes on the jeans with a marker or a soap bar. It is not recommended to make cuts too close to the waistband, otherwise pockets will appear inside.
  2. Once you’ve marked the bottom, place a piece of heavy cardboard or a cutting board inside the pant leg so you don’t cut into the jeans. Make cuts according to the intended pattern. Then rub the punctured places with a pumice stone and pull the vertical blue threads with tweezers. Thus, the holes will have an elegant shabby look.
  3. .If you want to intensify the wear effect, treat several areas of the pants with bleach and rub with sandpaper. You can create additional decor from rhinestones, appliqués or fabric inserts.

To make fashionable ripped jeans at home, it is not enough to randomly shred the fabric. Study photos of celebrities or street fashion where the girls are posing in beautiful ripped jeans. To create stylish holes, we do not recommend taking very tight pants. Holes look great on classic fit jeans or boyfriends.

Fashionable ripped jeans at home – where to make cuts?

For you to get really stylish and good looking ripped jeans, the cuts have to be in the right places. Then the thing will look harmonious. Holes are usually made on pockets, a belt (in this case, it is better to give preference to fringed cuts, rather than through), and, of course, on the legs themselves. The legs can be decorated with through holes and scuffs, distribute them anywhere along the length, but it is better not to affect the knee area. First of all, jeans with ripped knee holes do not look stylish. Second, in the coming fall and winter, they’re just plain cold. And finally, such holes in the folds of the knees are very stretched and quickly grow in size. If you want to place holes in this area, it is best to move them a little above or just below the knees.

How to make ripped jeans with your own hands: choosing the right jeans for experiments

Let’s start with what pants can pretend to be fashionable ripped jeans. It’s before all :

  • boring jeans, but still pretty solid and in good condition
  • new jeans – no need to buy an expensive thing, “experimental” jeans are best bought during a sale, in a cheap store or a discount store
  • jeans that fit well but look too boring and not quite modern
  • any jeans (other than the ones we list below) if you like deliberately casual, hippie and grunge looks

Which jeans should not be cut?

  • heavily worn jeans will destroy your image, and if completely worn, the holes in the fabric may completely disperse
  • jeans with stains that cannot be removed
  • jeans worn between the legs and over the knees

How to make ripped jeans with your own hands: decoration ideas

Some girls want to decorate jeans not only with decorative holes, but also with additional elements. We offer models in denim.

1. Lace inserts. Cuts can be “patched” with pieces of lace. Surely you have seen such models of jeans: the combination of childish negligence and feminine decor is very expressive. Take a piece of lace – to choose the right size, be guided by the number and scale of the holes to be closed. There are two ways: you can choose lace that is close to the shade of jeans, or, on the contrary, choose contrasting colors. Cut the lace into pieces slightly larger than the holes and sew on the wrong side with frequent stitches using matching threads.

2. Embroidery. The method is suitable for those who are not new to embroidery. First, select the appropriate pattern. Then determine where on the jeans you will place it. With a scrap or crayon, transfer the outlines of the image to the fabric. Small designs look great on the pockets and large ones look great on the hips. You can also place any elongated composition along the edge of the jeans or on the belt line: various twigs, ornaments, etc. Embroider the motif in cross stitch or satin stitch, then iron at medium temperature to avoid damaging the threads.

3. Pearls and rhinestones. Beads can be sewn, and even easier with rhinestones – get thermal rhinestones, which are quickly glued to the fabric with a hot iron. Before gluing, degrease the denim, for this it is better to wash the thing. Thus, the glue will adhere more firmly to the fibers of the material. Next, decide if you are going to arrange the rhinestones in a specific pattern or just “scatter” them as a decorative, abstract finish. To prevent the glue from getting between the layers of the pants, place a piece of paper under the location of the intended pattern in the jeans. Lay out the decor with rhinestones, also cover it with paper and iron it with an iron at 160-180 degrees. You need to press lightly on the iron to fix the pattern firmly. Twenty to thirty seconds is enough for the adhesive to seize. You can also attach rhinestones by setting the iron to steam mode. Pebbles are more convenient to arrange with tweezers.

4. Rivets. Looks great as a decoration on the belt and pockets, as well as on the side seams. Lay out the jeans on a table or on the floor, mark the pattern of the rivets on the fabric and punch holes in the correct places. Bend the petals of the rivets for more reliable fastening.

5. Painting drawings. For more accurate drawing of images, it is convenient to use stencils. You can cut them yourself out of cardboard. Choose water-based acrylic paints. The dyed jeans can then be machine washed, but by setting the temperature to a maximum of 40 degrees.

6. Tai Dai. In addition to cuts, jeans can be decorated with a tie-dye ornament. This is a pattern on the fabric, also called “boiled”. Stylishly faded, and even beautiful ripped jeans will become a real wardrobe decoration. It is better to buy paints specially designed for this technique, in addition to the dye you will need a large container to soak the jeans. If you are going to create a multi-colored pattern, prepare several containers at once. You also need rubber bands (stationery or hair), yarn or string with which to tie the knots on the fabric. Before painting, put on protective gloves and cover surrounding surfaces with newspapers or oilcloth. The method is as follows: we twist the fabric in several places, secure it with rubber bands and place it in diluted dye. The smaller the knot, the smaller the pattern will be and vice versa. Instead of dyes, you can use bleach, which you need to sprinkle on certain areas of the fabric.

How to wear trendy women’s ripped jeans?

For autumn and winter, we recommend decorating the model with small holes or just scuffs. If you always choose shameless trendy ripped jeans with real through holes, wear it with flesh-colored pantyhose without shine. Black tights can only be worn under black jeans.

Stylists recommend choosing a low-key environment for ripped jeans: simple t-shirts, turtlenecks and cardigans. A strict jacket or a deliberately voluminous sweater in a relaxed silhouette will look good.

For a more elegant look, women’s ripped jeans can be worn with a silk shirt or blouse. In the fall, the combination of such jeans and a leather jacket is relevant, especially leather jackets, which will give the image a slightly bold and rocker look. In winter, under worn jeans, you can get a laconic coat or a sheepskin aviator coat. As for shoes, ankle boots, sneakers, rough boots will be the best addition to ripped denim.
