Juca Chaves, composer and comedian who scoffed at the military dictatorship, dies at the age of 84

musician and comedian Juca Chaves died on Saturday night, 26, in Salvador, where he was hospitalized in the São Rafael hospital. He was 84 years old and died of respiratory problems. The body will be cremated this Sunday in the capital of Bahia.

Jurandyr Czaczkes Chaves, better known as Juca Chaves, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1938, and established himself as a composer of songs whose lyrics carried ironic metaphors especially against the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985)

In an excerpt from the song Quantos Somos, for example, he says:

“Diplomats, soldiers, deputies, city councilors / ministers and senators, the press, parliamentarians / 5 thousand one hundred and ten Barnabas of Brazil / What is left is what is good / Without Sarney 90 thousand”.

He was also critical of the mainstream press and of the phonographic market itself. He was exiled in Portugal in the 70s but, disturbing the then dictatorial regime of that country with his satires which then gained space on local radio and television, he moved to the Italy.

Among his best known songs are Little box, Thank you, The accomplice, Girl, I miss you, For those who dream of Ana Maria (played in the film The husband of a good woman since 1960) and bossa nova presidentthis in honor of Juscelino Kubitschekwho presided over the country between 1956 and 1961.

Juca was also a notorious proponent of São Paulo football team and, in 2006, he ran for senator in Bahia for CSDP, in 4th place, with 19,603 votes. You campaigned in poem format, which set them apart from other candidates
