Launched in 1996 by film critic Amir Labaki, É Tudo Verdade takes place every year in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Here’s everything we know about the 2023 edition:
It’s all true 2023
This year the event starts on April 13th and will last until the following Sunday, April 23rd. In addition, the festival takes place in six cinemas in São Paulo and three in Rio de Janeiro.
In São Paulo, the cinemas that will screen the It’s All True films are: Cine Marquise, Cinemateca Brasileira, IMS Paulista, Sesc 24 de Maio and SPCine – Centro Cultural São Paulo. In Rio de Janeiro, they are at the NET Botafogo station and the NET Rio station.
This year the awards ceremony takes place at 18:00 on April 22 in São Paulo, at the Cinemateca Brasileira. Subsequently, the winners will present their productions in special re-enactments in the two capitals on the following Monday, April 23rd.

The American documentary “Subject” (2022), by Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla
Hall, will have its national premiere in the opening session in São Paulo for
guests on April 12 at the Cinemateca Brasileira. the opening a
guests of Estação NET Botafogo will exhibit the world premiere of “1968 – A

From April 17 to 23, Sesc Digital will stream two films by
Latin American Focus: “Silent Beauty”, by Jasmin Mara López, e
“Hot Club de Montevideo” by Massimiliano Contenti. Programming
streaming presents at Itaú Cultural Play, between April 24 and 30, seven gods
short films from the Brazilian competition.
It’s all true 2022
In the 2022 edition the Brazilian documentary “When Chega o Ar”, by Anna Petta and Helena Petta, and “Sacada’s film“, by Pawel Lozinski, were the big winners of the festival.
Among the other awarded international productions there is “Ultraviolet and blood-spitting gangs” (France), by Robin Huzinger, which received an honorable mention from the jury. In addition, the jury chose “How do you measure a year?“, by Jay Rosenblatt (USA), as best short film in competition. The short, in fact, subsequently received an Oscar nomination, in the 2023 edition.
Finally, among the national teams awarded in the last edition we have “Symphony of a common man“, by José Joffily, which received an honorable mention. In addition, the best short film in the Brazilian competition was “Songs from a holy book“, by Cesar Gananian and Cassiana der Haroutiounian.”Where is Elena?“, directed by Esther Vital, was chosen as an honorable mention.
