Lagum releases ‘Depois do Fim’, the most intimate project of his career: ‘It’s a healing album’

New beginning, introspection, path, purgatory, comfort and discomfort. These are some of the words that members of the Lagum use to describe After the endthe band’s new album, which hit digital platforms early this Friday the 14th.

The album will be a visual project and will contain 14 tracks, including those already released Point of viewalso part of the EP END, released in March. The three songs of this previous work served as a preview for the current phase of the group, the most intimate and personal since the beginning of their career.

In an interview with Stadium, Pedro Calais, Zani Furtado, George Borges AND Francesco Jardim say that After the end it was over a year in the making and reflects the greater hardships the musicians went through as a band, including the death of the drummer Uncle Wilsonin April 2021, at the age of 34.

“This process was long, but it was in the midst of great turmoil for the band, which was dealing with the new four members,” says Zani Furtado, the group’s guitarist. “I think there’s a lot of both in there, in every aspect, both emotional and productive and everything in between.”

For Jorge Borges, also a guitarist, the songs are a reflection of this process. “This album is like a photograph: he has captured us in that moment and, in that moment, we are like this”, he explains.

The album is the first to be entirely produced without Uncle Wilson’s participation. The previous work of the band, Memories (where I never went)it was released eight months after the drummer’s death, but he had still participated in some of the compositions and recordings.

“We went through it giving time and time again,” says vocalist, Pedro Calais. “With this album, we haven’t tried to find another member or put anyone in. We still have a lot to figure out as these four individuals still are and are finding each other. Less and less, I want a replacement.”

In this way, the creation of the album played an important role in the reconstruction of the group and the connection between the members. Calais vouches that, “after so much pain, suffering and ‘headaches’, this is a happy ending” for the band.

Scope

In 2022, Lagum received a nomination for the Latin Grammy for disk Memories (where I never went) in the category “Best Album of Rock or Alternative Music in Portuguese”. It is natural that after this hit and hits like He leaves AND HEYthe group feels some pressure for a new release.

According to them, however, that was not the case. In addition to sales, streaming and awards, the group says they want the album to “reach the right people at the right time.”

“Of course I want him to do well in numbers. [Eles] it’s reflected in the ticket sales, in the people, but my personal concern is with the quality of that. We made an album that has a purpose. I said that, for me, After the end it’s a healing album,” says Calais.

The singer recalls that production on the album began at a time when his mental health was in quite a state of shock. “Writing made me look at myself. And looking through the lyrics helped me recover some of my head, which was lost at one point,” he explains.

This “healing” effect, as he puts it, is what the singer hopes the project will create in other people: “This album coming out, I just want it to reach people who can be made better just like I was making it”.
