“That speech shocked everyone and was considered capacitative, which is a crime, by experts and people in the affected community,” he said.
The presenter Marcos Mion used his social media this Friday 21st to criticize a speech by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on people with intellectual disabilities. This week, in a meeting with ministers and governors on the country’s school attacks, the chief executive said that people with “mental disabilities” have “screw imbalance problems”.
“WHO [Organização Mundial de Saúde] I have always said that in humanity there must be about 15% of people with some mental deficiency problem. If this number is true, and you take Brazil with 220 million inhabitants, if you take 15% of that, that means we have almost 30 million people with imbalance problems. A misfortune can happen in a moment,” Lula said.
In a video posted on Instagram, Mion said that this speech by the president is capacitative and explained that it is wrong to use the term “mental disability”. “That speech shocked everyone and was considered capacitating, which is a crime, by specialists and people in the affected community,” the presenter said.
“The term used for many years is intellectual disability and not mental disability, as Lula used it. We have to control ourselves, learn and adapt. It still refers to people who say they have ‘life imbalance problems’, who don’t it’s just very pejorative, but it encourages other people to keep using these terms, which must stay in the past,” he added.
Mion, who is the father of Romeo, a 17-year-old diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, also pointed out that the statement irresponsibly links intellectual disabilities with instances of school violence.
“This is absurd, there is no evidence for it. As a father of an autistic person, I feel affected. And I speak as part of the autistic community, that we fight against all prejudice, against ableism, 24 hours a day. I work tirelessly of generating information and content to, who knows, one day raise awareness to such a high level that there will only be empathy and respect,” he said.
The presenter also asked people to commit themselves to listening, learning and changing their attitudes on the subject. “It is of no use to me and thousands of profiles to continue posting content if those on the other side listen and throw away everything they have heard. It is necessary that everyone also commits to change, listen, learn and help us transmit this. The president Lula in this. Before proposing to speak for everyone, the presidential candidate must know and respect everyone. The same goes for all the authorities who represent us”.
“I also want to make it clear that this fight for autism awareness, for an end to prejudice, for rights, has no party. We fight out of respect for everyone, with no parties involved. It’s just love and desire for a better, more inclusive world. and more accessible. This is the future,” he concluded.
