Michael J. Fox has been battling Parkinson’s for 30 years and has revealed how the disease has affected his life
Actor Michael J. Fox, 61, cited struggles and 30-year struggle with Parkinson’s disease in a new interview for the show CBS Sunday Morning.
Known for the iconic role of Marty McFly, the protagonist of the franchise Back to the Future he revealed that he thinks he won’t have that many years of life ahead of him. “I won’t make it to 80. I won’t lie. It’s getting harder, it’s getting harder. It’s getting harder. Every day it’s harder,” she confessed.
According to Fox, surgery to remove a benign tumor cut short her Parkinson’s treatment, and the break affected other parts of her body like her arms and legs.
Diagnosis
Michael was diagnosed in 1991 when he was 29 years old. At the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award ceremony in 2022, he revealed details about the therapeutic journey since. “I was told I only had ten years left to work. It was a lie. The hardest part of my diagnosis was dealing with the certainty of the disease and the uncertainty of the situation. I just knew it was going to get worse. The diagnosis was definitive , but progress was indefinite and uncertain,” he said.
Married since 1988 to actress Tracy Pollan, with whom he has four children, Michael spoke in that same speech about the importance of family support in recent years. “Tracy made it clear that she’s been with me the whole time. So I went on seven years of denial, trying to make sense of it all. The guy who left Canada convinced he could make anything happen, at least by working hard and believing, he now had a difficult task ahead of him,” he declared.
“I told a few people about the disease and they kept my secret. So there were all kinds of doctors who helped me understand the physical processes I was going through. Eventually, I felt the need to tell everyone. I realized it would have a big impact on my career,” he concluded.
Michael is the leader of an organization focused on Parkinson’s research, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which opened in 2000.
