DC Comics announced that renowned comic book artist, writer and editor Jim Lee was promoted to president of publishing on Wednesday (3/5). The artist, who was already the publisher’s editor, will continue with his duties as editor and still represent DC in the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate, especially creative efforts to integrate the portfolio of comic book publications across all media, supporting Warner Bros. brands and studios.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in St. Louis, USA, Lee is one of the most recognizable names in American comics and has been a comforting presence at DC amid the instability of the publisher’s character-driven film adaptations. As one of DC’s leaders, he has seen a succession of owners take ownership of the company, including Time Warner, AT&T, and Discovery, with various owners pushing DC back and forth.
Its promotion is seen as a nod to continuity in the era of Warner Bros. Discovery and guarantees less noise for the works of the brand new DC Studios under the command of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Ironically, Lee was one of Marvel’s top artists in the early 1990s, where he set the still unbeatable record for single issue sales (approximately 4 million copies of 1991’s “X-Men” #1 ). This success, however, inspired him and other renowned creators to leave the company to form their own publisher, Image Comics, which rocked the comic book scene at the time. DC eventually acquired one of Image Comics’ imprints, Wildstorm, created by Lee, in a move that allowed him to join the company, where he became a major creative force, responsible for events such as “The New 52” and “Rebirth”. initiatives that have relaunched entire lines of monthly superhero comics.
Under Lee’s leadership, DC has also made its entrance into the digital comic book market with the company’s digital subscription service, as well as opening its eyes to the importance of international markets. Some of his initiatives, however, have been sabotaged by Warner’s transient owners, such as the pioneering streaming service DC Universe and the innovative virtual convention DC FanDome, copied by Netflix and many other competitors.
