Death, divorce, betrayal: who cursed the royal family of Monaco

For more than a year, the press has been talking about rumors about the crisis in the family life of Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Charlene. But if you think about it, more than one generation of the royal dynasty of Monaco is facing problems in their personal life. They say their family has long been cursed…

Monaco already seems like a great place on earth to many, and if you were born into the royal family there, then you won’t know any heartache! But don’t jump to conclusions. Life in the palace can be a nightmare and a punishment, especially when otherworldly forces come into play.

The Grimaldi family, who have ruled Monaco for more than 700 years, are said to have been charmed, meaning none of the family’s marriages will survive.

Legend has it that the story dates back to 1297, when the first Grimaldi, Francesco, nicknamed the Insidious, deceived the defenders of the principality by disguising himself as a monk, to kill them to seize the fortress.

According to another version, the curse was placed on the family by a witch after she was raped or kidnapped by one of the Grimaldi – so she took revenge.

“Never a single Grimaldi will find happiness in marriage,” she reportedly said.

The charm is said to have been reinforced in 1515 by Claudine of Monaco, when on her deathbed she bequeathed that no Grimaldi should ever ally himself with representatives of a foreign power. This order has been repeatedly violated… Take, for example, the last rulers of Monaco: Rainier III married an American and his son Albert found a wife from South Africa.

Indeed, the royal family of Monaco is surrounded by tragic deaths, sudden divorces and high-profile scandals linked to extramarital affairs.

Judge by yourself :

  • Grace Kelly tragically passed away

  • Princess Caroline has been married three times and widowed once

  • Princess Stephanie was divorced twice – her chosen ones were far from aristocrats: one was a bodyguard who shamelessly cheated on her, the second was a circus performer

  • Prince Albert II fell into a scandal with illegitimate children, and his marriage to Charlene from the first days was described as extremely unhappy – supposedly the bride even tried to escape before the wedding

And these are just examples from the recent history of the principality. But the ancestors of the ruling monarch suffered no less. For example, the marriage of Albert’s grandparents, Count Pierre de Polignac and Princess Charlotte, was also extremely unhappy and ended in divorce.
