Tallulah Willis details how she deals with the actor’s current condition, diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia
The 29-year-old designer confessed that it was very difficult for her to accept her father’s illness. “I’m swinging between the present and the past when I talk about Bruce: he is, he was, he is, he was. That’s because I have hopes for my father that I’m loathe to give up. He was kind and charming, elegant, sweet and a little crazy — and I embrace all of that. He still knows who I am and lights up when I walk into the room,” she said.
Tallulah also recalled early signs of the disease, which was initially billed as aphasia. But the protagonist of the franchise Die Hard has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a set of brain disorders that cause changes in personality and behavior and lead to difficulty understanding and producing words.
“I’ve known for a long time that something was wrong. It started with a sort of vague indifference, which the family attributed to hearing loss caused by working in Hollywood. Subsequently, this lack of response escalated and I sometimes took it personally He had two children with my stepmother, Emma Heming, and I thought he’d lost interest in me.”
He continued, “Even though we know that’s not true, my teenage brain tortured itself with a few math errors: ‘I’m not cute enough for my mom, I’m not interesting enough for my dad.’
Whenever she visits her father in recent months, the designer makes it a point to document her time with him through photos and voicemails. “I’m like an archaeologist, looking for treasure in things I’ve never paid much attention to. I guess I’m trying to document, build a record for the day he’s not there to remember him and us,” she said. “I know the trials are coming, that this is the beginning of the pain, but this whole thing about loving yourself before loving someone else is real,” she added.
Bruce Willis has three daughters with Demi Moore – Rumer, Scout and Tallulah – and two with his current wife Emma Heming – Mabel and Evelyn.
