The musician spoke exclusively with Terra about his career, politics and art
Singer Matthew Carlho it took six years to release his first solo album. The artist, who was already playing around exploring different sounds when he was part of Banda Uó, has released National passion(2023) mixing funk, samba, pop and MPB.
Breaking down barriers is something Carrilho does with some frequency, both in art and in his personal life. In an exclusive interview with Earththe musician argued that the future of queer art also involves politics.
“I can see us stronger, more powerful, every day filling better jobs. I can see a trans president. We are seeing girls in politics breaking everything. time, love, accept it, because nobody goes back to the closet here”, he provokes.
According to the singer, many people hide behind the local linguistic expression in order not to commit themselves to promoting the struggle of the LGBTQIA+ community. “We also want it to be your place to speak. It is those outside (the community) who have the greater reach to be able to embrace and have this re-educated and transformed. So we need everyone to contribute to this change,” he defends.
For him, being LGBTQIA+ in Brazil is still a source of fear. “Very scared, especially now with the change of government, we have seen extremely aggressive and inhumane reactions, so it is very scary. (…) We are still without protection. It is scary to enter an Uber because you don’t know what you will find there. It is scary to be in the corner. You don’t know what could happen,” he reflects.
Inspirations for the new album
The musician has chosen to satisfy a part of his audience who were asking for songs that were not only danceable, but also had some of the drama of relationships between people.
One of the highlights is the track any nightclubwhich was inspired by a personal drama experienced by Carrilho, who waited for the return of a lover from a season abroad, and was swapped for a random nightclub when the person returned.
“So I think the any nightclub it speaks a lot about that relationship where the person doesn’t put you first and always puts other things that are not you. People are connecting a lot with this song, that’s why everyone went through a similar situation,” she says.
According to him, audiences have embraced songs that flirt with MPB, such as the track “Rio de Janeiro,” which has a slight reference to musician Sérgio Mendes. “I thought they (the fans) would like the dance ones a little more, like ‘Noite Perfeita’, which goes more on the funk side. But no, they embraced the more MPB ones, the more romantic ones and I was super happy” , celebrate.
Above all, National passion it’s a personal job, that’s why the launch is delayed, according to Carrilho.
“At this point I think I was very brave to actually want to tell my story. (…) This album is to show the artist that I am, and that perhaps wasn’t quite as defined yet,” he says.
