An inadmissible gesture for the royal family: how Elizabeth II broke protocol at Princess Diana’s funeral

It is generally accepted that Elizabeth II has always hated Princess Diana – especially after her revelations made in the context of her divorce from Charles. However, during the funeral procession, the Queen proved otherwise – and has long been the subject of discussion in the media.

Even decades later, Princess Diana’s death is shrouded in an incredible amount of conspiracy theories. So, according to one version, Elizabeth II herself helped to “eliminate” the problematic daughter-in-law – who, by the way, was always skeptical of the overly emotional and open Lady Di.

Princess Diana has vehemently opposed palace principles regarding the upbringing of her sons Harry and William. And when Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles ceased to be a secret to the royal court, Diana completely stopped following many protocols – which, again, couldn’t bring her closer to the Queen.

Nevertheless, it is unlikely that we will ever know the true attitude of Elizabeth II towards her daughter-in-law. All that’s left for the public to do is delve into the new revelations from court insiders. And remember the unusual cases that happened in the Windsor family.

Thus, after the Queen’s death, a video with archival footage taken at the time of Princess Diana’s funeral went viral on social media. During the funeral procession, Elizabeth II almost imperceptibly lowered her head when the hearse with the body of the princess caught up with her.

It would seem to be so? Especially when you consider that Elizabeth’s move could be an accident? In fact, such an innocent gesture was seen as a gross violation of royal protocol. And the leader was aware of this, especially since from childhood she was taught to stand and sit still for a long time (we talked about this in detail here), so as not to give others a only chance to doubt his emotional state.

If you focus on the rules of the same royal protocol, a short gesture from Elizabeth II can be considered an expression of compassion for Diana.

By the way, it is believed that this moment became a turning point in the attitude of the royal family to the rules of protocol. Those close to the Queen have become more open in public. Within certain limits, of course.
