The singer spoke about his 18th studio album, his 40-year career and his meeting with Nathália Mastrobiso, 30 years his junior
Singer Supplement57 years old, he decided to make a portrait of the city of São Paulo in his 18th album, the boutique punk. The project, launched on the 30th, brings together songs about street violence, social inequality and even a response from the singer to the recurring invitations he receives to run for public office.
Son of the deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT-SP), Supla reveals that every year he is invited to participate in an election. In 2022, he even considered the possibility and talked about it with the PT.
“I believe that I would be a good politician, but when you enter this business, you enter with a party and you have to follow the norms of the party, it is not one mind. In 2022, when I received these invitations again, I decided to talk to my father of the argument and he told me I was already making politics with my songs, I just wasn’t there making the laws, so I left it at that,” he says.
The new project of Brazilian riddle he already has five video clips and in some he also stars with Nathalia Mastrobiso, your girlfriend. The two’s relationship headed social media in early June, due to the age difference between the two – he is 57 and she is 26.
“It’s normal for the public to talk, but I don’t give a damn. Age doesn’t matter, love does,” she retorts.
In conversation with EarthSupla detailed the creation of her new album, talked about plans to celebrate her career’s 40th anniversary in 2024, revealed the dreams she still has as an artist, and what her next career steps will be. Check out the interview in full.
What were your musical references to create the album?
It’s a rock and roll album, it’s a São Paulo album, made in downtown São Paulo. I live in Praça da República, my studio is here in the region; the musicians who did it with me live in Brás, so, like… We breathe what’s on this record. Many songs were created from the guitar, but others came in ‘jam’, in improvisation. It was a spontaneous and democratic album, despite having a boss, which is me. The creation of him was unconscious, but very St. Paul.
It’s a very São Paulo album, showing the good and bad sides of the city. Was this essence planned?
It wasn’t planned, it was natural. For example, the song that opens the album is “Supla Zombie” and that’s how I feel in this fucking city#, and it’s not just me, you know? Sometimes, unknowingly, people end up behaving like zombies with lots of information, pollution, in short, the body ends up abused and we don’t even notice it.
Is the album a denunciation or a tribute to the city?
It’s more of a giveaway. We both love and hate this city, but we live here. The song ‘Ratazana de iPhone’ speaks a lot about this side of denunciation. Do we pay taxes, do we assume our duties, to have this kind of security? I got to visit Fundação Casa after the song came out and I hope I changed some mind. I went there because I didn’t just want to talk about crime in a superficial way, I want to understand the subject, be in it, talk to people from different sides.
Like it or not, it’s tempting [roubar]. The guy who does that doesn’t have the opportunity and then steals a smartphone like that and makes a lot of money, but that’s not how things work. Since the pandemic, many people have run out of money and crime has increased. Talking about social contrast in my music and visiting Fundação Casa touched me in a very personal place, it made me understand my father’s struggle [Eduardo Suplicy].
Some people say I’m passing the cloth to the fringe, but that’s not true. There are people who get arrested for stealing cellphones while there are people who steal a lot more in politics. I don’t see anyone talking about it.
In “They want me to become a politician”, you say it would be “almost suicidal” to choose this path. Tell me a little about this.
Once, talking to MV Bill, he told me some truths. Personally I think he would be a good politician, but when you enter this field, you enter a party and you have to follow the rules of the party, he is not alone. In 2022, when I received these invitations again, I decided to talk to my father [Eduardo Suplicy] on the subject and told me that I was already making politics with my songs, I just wasn’t there to create the laws, so I let it go.
In several songs such as “It’s Valentine’s Day” AND “I’m not a poet”, you talk about love and you also act with Nathália, your girlfriend. What was it like mixing work and romance?
I wrote those songs for her, but it was easy to record them together. Any relationship takes work, we have to work on it every day.
also in ‘Saint Valentine’ talk about a romantic future. Are you already planning marriage and children?
We are living day by day. Everyone has plans, of course, but I don’t think we’ve thought about that at the moment. For example, she wants to pursue an artistic career, so I don’t think a child is right for us at the moment. Until I was born, nursed, raised, two years passed… Unfortunately it’s the sad reality.
Your relationship has been criticized for the age difference. How do you deal with it?
It’s normal for the public to talk, but I don’t give a shit. Age doesn’t matter, love does. My father’s girlfriend is 30 years younger, he is 82, it’s the same porr@.
Only one year left to complete the 40-year career. Do you still have dreams to achieve?
I have only one dream: to have worldwide success. I still have no plans on how to celebrate my 40-year career. At the moment, the idea is to promote this album and do shows until the c* can’t take it anymore.
