Demi Lovato, who has previously come out as pansexual and non-binary, revealed that she only came out to her parents when she was 25. In an interview with American radio SiriusXM, the singer detailed how they reacted and explained the reasons that led her to avoid having this conversation with her family.
“It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom”he confessed. “I was bisexual at the time and then I realized I was pansexual. It took me a while.”
According to the 30-year-old singer, she grew up in a Christian environment and decided not to open up to family members until she was comfortable with it. Demi also recalled some of the clues she gave in her music “Fresh for Summer”, launched in 2015.
In the song there are suggestive excerpts about the fact that she also likes women: “Tell me what you want, what you like, that’s fine, I’m a bit curious too. Tell me if it’s wrong, if it’s right, I don’t care. I can keep a secret, right?”. Along the text also runs the line “I liked the taste of the cherry, I just have to take a bite.”
The clues worked and facilitated Demi’s first conversation about her sexuality with her stepfather. “I said, ‘Hey, I have to tell you something,'” she says. “I said, ‘I like girls too,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I know. You released ‘Cool for the Summer.’
Even with the mother the conversation was easy. “She almost started crying and said, ‘I just want you to be happy.'” According to the singer, her mother’s reaction was “very precious and gratifying” because “there are so many parents who don’t react like that” and “it breaks my heart”.
