Artists such as MC Kevinho, Luísa Sonza, Xamã, Dilsinho, Ferrugem and Xande de Pilares have more than just national recognition and contribution to Brazilian music in common. All of them, as well as other famous people, are legally represented by the lawyer José Estevam Macedo Lima, who has become known as the ‘Sheriff of Social Networks’. The nickname comes from fans of the artists which helps address the image crisis on the Internet.

To the Earth, Macedo Lima explains that the branch of what he calls “Entertainment Advocacy” seeks to disprove the notion that the internet and social networks are a “lawless land”, a place where people can “stay hidden behind a fake profile”.

“It is a crisis management that starts from the removal of fake profiles, which carry out attacks and even death threats, up to the fight against fake news, fake news and even attempts at censorship and freedom of expression by artists “, explains the lawyer.

The action is “multidisciplinary”

A 1999 graduate of PUC Rio de Janeiro, Macedo Lima claims to have worked in criminal law, civil law and also tax law. This “multidisciplinary” vision has given him the foundations necessary to carry out his work in the area where he is located, at least since 2001.

It all started when I collaborated with a production company that represented renowned names on the national scene, such as the band O Rappa. From that moment on, the lawyer began to deepen the defense of artists and public figures. According to him, over the years, the growing use of social networks has made the job difficult.

“This Internet ‘boom’ affects more and more people. In the past we had image crises, but they did not have a destructive speed. They took time to happen, they depended on the circulation of the newspapers. Today it is instantaneous and reaches millions of people. in different territories,” he says.

Among the more complex works he mentions Macedo Lima cases involving the dissemination of lies, copyright infringements and lawsuits involving the “freedom of expression of thought”.

“It is when freedom of artistic expression is criminalized, when a letter ends up being considered criminal and the artist does nothing but exercise his right to the work. These cases are real legal aberrations”, criticizes the lawyer, without citing examples.

Trust and respect are essential

The work of a lawyer for a public person going through an image crisis begins with identifying the origin of this crisis, explains Macedo Lima. If the problem involves a legal issue, such as fake news, the job is to help the artist take a stand and thwart possible attacks.

“When these attacks happen, which come from people with the intention to harm, we proceed to court, through a criminal complaint. If the crime is slander or defamation, we file a private criminal case, always trying to remove that harmful content from the network “, explains the lawyer.

To work with celebrities and public figures, Macedo Lima explains that trust and respect are essential.

“We must always respect the other, not invade the area of intimacy. The artist always respects the lawyer and vice versa, because any relationship implies a lot of trust. We face any type of situation together”, he underlines.
