Sentenced to 30 years in prison for two cases of rape, Danny Masterson, former actor of “That ’70s Show”, has received letters of support from Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, his colleagues from the previous show. The actors wrote to the judge asking for leniency for Masterson, highlighting his character.
Statements from Kutcher and Kunis
“While I understand that the trial found him guilty of two counts of rape and that the victims have a great desire for justice, I hope that my testimony about his character will be taken into consideration at sentencing,” Kutcher said in a letter reported by Variety.
Mila Kunis wrote: “I wholeheartedly attest to Danny Masterson’s exceptional character and the tremendous positive influence he has had on me and those around him.”
In total, more than 50 letters in defense of Masterson were submitted to the court, but these did not change the outcome of the sentence.
Test details
Masterson was sentenced Thursday (7/9) to serve two consecutive 15-year sentences, as well as having to register as a sex offender. During the hearing, Judge Charlaine Olmedo rejected the defense’s request for a new trial. The accusation of a third victim was rejected by the court.
The victims, who were members of the Church of Scientology like Masterson, were initially hesitant to report the allegations to authorities because of the religious institution’s teachings. Eventually they left the church.
Defense attorney Shawn Holley asked that the sentences be served concurrently, citing Masterson’s lack of criminal history and the fact that he has a young daughter. The request was rejected.
Although the prosecution had asked for a life sentence, Masterson could still face that sentence as he received an “indeterminate life sentence” with the possibility of parole after 30 years, depending on factors such as good behavior.
The actor must begin serving his sentence immediately.
