Ashton Kutcher leaves sexual victims’ NGO after defending Danny Masterson

Actor Ashton Kutcher has resigned as president of Thorn, a non-governmental organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking and supporting victims of sexual abuse, which he co-founded with his ex-wife Demi Moore. The decision was made official with a letter to the board, published on Friday (15/9) on the institution’s website. The reason Kutcher gave was his character letter, signed with his wife Mila Kunis, in support of Danny Masterson, an actor convicted of rape and the two’s co-stars on the series “That ’70s Show.”

Reflection and decision

“After my wife and I spent several days listening, personally reflecting, learning, and speaking with survivors and Thorn employees and leadership, I have decided that the responsible thing to do is to step down as Chairman of the Board, effective immediately. I cannot let my lapse in judgment distract from our efforts and the children we serve,” Kutcher said in the letter.

The actor pointed out that despite more than a decade and a half of work focused on supporting sexually exploited people around the world, his support for Masterson represented another form of historical silencing of the victims the organization defends.

“Victims of sexual abuse have historically been silenced, and the character statement I submitted is yet another painful example of how to question victims who are brave enough to share their experiences,” she said. “The mission must always come first, and I want to offer my sincere apologies to all victims of sexual assault and everyone at Thorn who I harmed with what I did. And to the broader advocacy community, I am deeply sorry.”

Kutcher concluded the statement by saying he is “proud of what we have accomplished over the past decade and will continue to support Thorn’s work. Thank you for your tireless support and dedication to this cause.”

The situation also affects Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis also resigned from her position as an observer on the board of directors, Time magazine reported.

Thorn board member Suzanne Bell expressed support for Kutcher, noting that “his unwavering dedication and commitment to Thorn throughout his career has allowed the organization to become the leader it is in the ecosystem of children’s safety”.

Nearly a week ago, Kutcher and Kunis posted a joint video apology on Instagram following their letters asking for leniency in sentencing for Masterson — who faces a minimum of 30 years in prison after being found guilty on two counts of rape – fell apart. . “We are aware of the pain caused by the character letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson,” Kutcher said in the video released Saturday (9/9).
