Elon Musk has announced that social network X, formerly known as Twitter, will adopt a “small monthly payment system” as a strategy to combat the proliferation of bots. The statement was made during a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, this Monday (18/9). Musk said the new payment system will be cheaper than the current Twitter Blue, which costs $8 a month.
Fighting robots
“We want it to be just a small amount of money,” Musk said. “It’s a longer discussion, but in my opinion this is the only defense against large armies of robots, because as AI gets really, really good, it can actually pass these types of CAPTCHA tests better than humans.”
The businessman had previously expressed concern about the platform’s battle against bots and had even considered making the social network fully paid shortly after acquiring it last year.
Space for extremism
The changes come at a time when the company is facing a significant decline in advertising revenue. In July, Musk wrote that the company had seen a nearly 50% drop in advertising revenue, as well as a high debt load. Netanyahu, in turn, called on Musk to fight neo-Nazism on the platform, saying that “this does not stop him from condemning anti-Semitism in all possible forums.”
Musk has defended criminal extremism on the platform in the name of freedom of expression. “If you don’t have that, then there’s no free speech,” he said.
