Netflix announced this Wednesday (18/10) the end of its Basic plan, which costs R$25.90 per month, effective next week in Brazil. The decision will not have any impact on current subscribers of this mode, but closes this subscription option for new users. The company highlighted as one of the reasons for the change a significant growth in adherence to the plan, which had already been implemented in other countries, with advertising.
Edit the details
Until then, Netflix offered four subscription options, the cheapest being the Standard plan with advertising for R$18.90 per month. Next came the Basic plan, followed by the Standard, R$39.90, and Premium, R$55.90 plans, both without advertising. Now only three options will be offered, Standard with ads, Basic and Premium (the only one with 4K images).
Global strategy
With the termination of Básico, the company aligns its offering strategy in Brazil with that adopted in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Italy and Canada. “In the third quarter of 1023, the number of members [que assinam o plano com anúncios] increased nearly 70% from the previous quarter and now represents approximately 30% of all new signups in 12 countries using this model,” Netflix noted in a statement.
Netflix highlighted that the change is part of a movement already seen in other countries, where the change “has spurred adoption of our ad-supported models and our Standard plans.” The measure will be extended to Germany, Spain, Japan, Mexico and Australia, as well as Brazil, next week.
Repercussion
Reactions quickly arose on social media, with many expressing dissatisfaction with the cost-benefit ratio. “Netflix is doing everything to make piracy reign supreme on the Internet,” one user complained.
