Kevin Spacey goes to court on sex crimes charges

Actor Kevin Spacey (from the “House of Cards” series) appeared in a London court on Thursday (16/6) to hear charges of four sexual crimes as a defendant.

Calm and smiling, he voluntarily participated in the trial, making the prosecution acknowledge his “full cooperation” in the investigation, but asked him to hand over his passport and sleep in his London residence until the next hearing, set for July 14 at the Crown. Southwark Court in South London.

He was released with no other precautionary measures and will respond to charges at liberty.

“He will have to answer these allegations if he is to move on with his life,” his attorney told the press. “Where will you hide? He lives in the United States and can be extradited. His family, his nine-year-old dog are in the United States.”

“His job requires him to go to meetings, participate in castings, meet directors and screenwriters,” he added, justifying Spacey’s decision to “appear” in British justice.

The 62-year-old actor is accused of sexually abusing three men between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire, one of them twice, as well as engaging in “penetrative sexual activity without consent,” according to a complaint filed by British Crown Special Crimes Division Prosecutor’s Office (CPS).

A man in his forties said he was sexually assaulted by Spacey twice in March 2005. Another man, in his thirties, said the crime against him took place in August 2008. Both allegedly took place in London. The Gloucestershire victim, also in her thirties, said she was sexually abused in April 2013.

With these complaints, more than 20 complaints of men accusing Spacey of harassment, abuse and sexual assault in the period between 1995 and 2013. “Star Trek: Discovery”), which, publicly accusing Spacey, initiated a dizzying change career for the two-time Academy Award winner (for “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty”).

After the first few complaints, Spacey was promptly fired from the “House of Cards” series, with members of the production joining in the allegations of harassment, and had a movie ready as a star set aside by Netflix. The platform preferred to lose money rather than post another job starring him.

Additionally, director Ridley Scott has decided to re-shoot “All the Money in the World” to remove the actor from the film, which was already over when the scandal broke. He was replaced by Christopher Plummer, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of him.

But Spacey was also very lucky. Two accusers who prosecuted him died before their cases reached the courts. Norwegian writer Ari Behn, ex-husband of the Princess of Norway, committed suicide at Christmas 2019, three months after the sudden death of a masseuse accusing the actor.

Finally, he had another lawsuit, filed by a boy who was 18 at the time of the harassment, abruptly withdrawn on the eve of the trial.

Thanks to the lack of conviction, Spacey was able to return to acting. He starred in an Italian film, “L’Uomo che Disegnò Diò”, directed and starring star Franco Nero, and played a villain in the low-budget film “Peter Five Eight”, which was brought to the Marché du Film, the Cannes Film Festival business to obtain international distributors.

The new complaints should keep these films unreleased, or at least preserved for a long time.
