Maria Rita says singing Elis Regina songs ‘is like letting my old lady out’

The singer revealed that recording her mother’s repertoire is a “feeling of caring for her”

Maria Rita spoke about his relationship with his mother’s songs, Eli Reginain an interview with Fatima Bernardes. The artist revealed that singing Elis’ repertoire is a way she found to “take care” of her mother, who died when she was still a child.

“I had the feeling that I didn’t have (and don’t have) the ability to take care of my mother. At some point, we take care of our parents, right? And I don’t. And then I thought I took care of her, singing for her. Which is the one thing I know how to do best in life. Like bringing my ‘veinha’ to the stage,” Maria commented about the experience of singing her mother’s songs.

Despite this, the artist commented, on the Assim Como a Gente program, that he had to face many comparisons with his mother and that he felt uncomfortable about this. “I went on stage and then it started: ‘the return of Elide’, ‘reincarnation’. It’s not like that. Heavy and wrong even from the point of view of spirituality,” she said.

“I promised myself that if I felt that these comments, this aggression (… ) were interfering with my relationship with my mother, I would stop,” she recalled.
