Geraldo Vieira de Oliveira and Maria Aparecida Moreira give an interview for the first time since the Olympic champion athlete’s death in September
Ricardo Alexandre Mendes was registered as an executor (person responsible for registering the assets and heirs of the estate). Since Walewska left no will, the role rightfully falls to Ricardo, to whom the athlete was married for 20 years. She had asked for separation shortly before the player’s death, but the divorce process was never concluded. There is no value of the athlete’s assets. Their marriage took place in partial community of property, what each had acquired after the marriage belonged to both.
The athlete’s family’s request, however, is that Ricardo be excluded from the inheritance. The main reason is because, according to the parents’ lawyer, he “tarnished the image” and “attacked the honor” of Walewska. Furthermore, Geraldo and Maria denounce Ricardo’s abusive treatment of their daughter. “I considered him like a son. He treated her very well. I wanted them both to be very well. In the presence of her parents, he sometimes mistreated her. We also saw him arguing with her. I even took them to the airport “And he cursed because he was in the car with me. I looked and he stopped talking. The husband who treated his wife close to her parents… we imagined: ‘And far from us, what could happen?’” Walewska’s father asked.
According to the athlete’s mother, the widower did not inform her that he had started the inventory. The last time they spoke was September 21, the day of Walewska’s death. Maria also reports that Rodrigo had warned that he would not go to his wife’s wake, but that he was not prevented from participating.
The family does not have access to the assets left by the athlete
Walewska invested in real estate. According to a financial advisor who accompanied her until 2019, she owned 23 properties, including 22 in Sao Paulo. Her parents, however, do not have access to a list of assets. “The entire ownership relationship no longer exists. There is only one. Ricardo himself said it. To whom and how it was sold, who and how it was paid, are the answers the family needs. This was not answered,” claims Maria Toledo, the parents of lawyer Walewska.
The athlete left no will. However, the letters written by them are attached to the trial. The lyrics mention the disappointment of discovering her husband’s child outside of the marriage. There is also talk of financial frustration, but without clarifying to whom the debts were owed. According to her parents, Walewska never talked about cheating with them.
The “attack on honor” is the argument for excluding widowers
The representative of Walewska’s parents claims that the fact that Ricardo publicly stated that his wife was a compulsive shopper is an attack on his image. In the report into Walewska’s death, he reported that he had “faced problems in the relationship” for at least four years.
The athlete’s mother does not deny Walewska’s love for shopping: “She had a compulsion to buy for the house and for herself.” Her father, however, reiterates that she has not reached the level at which she would have sold the properties, for example, to make other purchases. “If the court believes that he has the right, it is his right. If the court believes that we have the right, it is our right”, hopes Geraldo.
“Information that has tarnished and damaged his honor. This is why the family tries to consider Ricardo unworthy. There is no fight for the inheritance,” claims the parents’ lawyer.
Ricardo Alexandre Mendes spoke in a note signed by his lawyers. He confirmed once again that the marriage was going through a crisis. However, he denied any abusive relationship, saying these suspicions “couldn’t be further from the truth”. The widower also recalls that the two have built “stories of successes and mistakes, of ups and downs, but which certainly never had any trace of abuse”. Regarding the inventory, he did not comment, claiming that the case is being carried out under judicial secrecy.
Walewska’s career
Born in Belo Horizonte, Walewska began her professional volleyball career in 1995, playing in Minas Tênis Clube, a team where she remained until 1998, when she was called up to the Brazilian team for the first time by coach Bernardinho. She was only 19 years old. The player won a gold medal with the Brazilian team at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1999. The following year, the center helped Brazil win bronze at the Sydney Olympics.
After a period away from the national team, she was called up again by coach José Roberto Guimarães and was part of the team that finished fourth at the 2004 Athens Games. Walewska worked with the two great coaches of Brazilian volleyball: Ze Roberto AND Bernardino. Both mourned the athlete’s death, as well as other sports personalities and entities. The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) said Walewska was a “special player” and that her career in the sport will be “always remembered and revered.”
After retiring, Wal, as she was called, became a “leadership and high performance specialist,” as she called herself, and published the biography Other networksthe documentary The last act AND? the podcast Olympic Mind. Published in January this year, the biography, whose preface was written by Bernardinho, recounts the memories and challenges that the player had to face in life and in volleyball, to which she dedicated herself for 30 years.
Days before his death, he visited the training center of palms and I met the technician Abel Ferreira, with whom he exchanged books and experiences. The coach said it was an “extraordinary honor” to meet the athlete, voted the best central defender in the world in 2008. Like everyone, he greeted the news of the player’s death with disbelief.
