Where and how presenters are fired from GloboNews in a strange situation

Leila Sterenberg and Cecília Flesch prove that there is a productive life outside of the powerful news channel

GloboNews was the company least affected by Grupo Globo’s employee cuts in 2023. The only anchors fired left under unusual circumstances.

Leila Sterenberg’s dismissal in April after 25 years at the company came as a surprise. Versatile and very productive, she has been used to presenting different programs, from conventional news programs to debates with commentators.

The last permanent position was in the “Sunday Special”. Her passion for languages has made her one of the few speakers with simultaneous translation skills. You also gave an interview in Russian.

Of Jewish origin, he has produced relevant content on the Holocaust. The highlight is the documentary ‘Cartas da Bessarábia’ (available on Globoplay), a dive into his ancestors.

“I think I have become a reasonable professional,” Leila wrote ironically in GloboNews’ farewell post. Even today, colleagues do not understand the abrupt dismissal of such a qualified professional.

With no time for regrets, the 52-year-old journalist soon began working as a master of ceremonies and mediator at corporate and institutional events. He was with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

He directs the podcast ‘Meio Tempo’, by FGV Rio, and carries out interviews for the digital platforms of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI). He also produces for the Instituto Brasil Israel YouTube channel.

Working in the digital universe was the same path taken by the other presenter cut by GloboNews last year, Cecília Flesch, 39. After nearly two decades, she lost her job in May due to late fallout from an interview with remarks about the channel and her studio routine.

Vague phrases – like ‘(A GloboNews) It’s a nuisance, there’s only politics and economics’ – taken from the podcast ‘É Nóia Minha?’ angered their journalistic bosses. The dismissal appears to have occurred not so much due to “sincere” statements, but rather due to the outcry caused on social media and the wounded ego of the broadcaster’s top management.

Since October the journalist has anchored ‘RivoNews’ on the YouTube channel of the same name, available on Spotify. Broadcast live every Friday at 12.30pm, the fact-finding program also features Gabriel Wainer, Manu Musitano and Pedro Caramuru.

Cecília also participates in ‘RivoTalks’, where she interviews personalities with the most diverse profiles. Additionally, she created a public speaking course called the “Fale Method.”

Everything indicates that television misses Leila and Cecília more than the opposite. Successful examples of professionals who reinvented themselves after an unexpected career break.

Yes, there is a smart, more entertaining life outside the TV studios. “I needed a foot in my ass to push me forward,” Flesch wrote in a recent Instagram Stories post. More didactic and stimulating, impossible.
