Daniel Alves’ brother reacts to the rumor that the player died in prison

The profile of the athlete convicted of rape in Spain has received thousands of comments of condolence and hateful messages

On Saturday evening (9), a rumor took over Brazilian social networks, particularly on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Daniel Alves, 40, would have been found dead in the cell he occupies in the Brians 2 penitentiary centre, on the outskirts of Barcelona.

The alleged news was reported by some journalists, including the presenter Luiz Bacci, from Record’s ‘Cidade Alerta’. Seeking a quick audience, sensationalist profiles took the opportunity to publish headlines about alleged suicides.

On the player’s official Instagram page, where he is followed by 36 million users, the replacement of his photo with a black circle increased rumors among those who interpreted it as a hypothetical reference to mourning.

His brother, Ney Alves, posted a message and video in Stories to deny Daniel’s death. “How much cruelty towards human beings, how much cruelty. They convicted my brother for the speech of a woman who entered the men’s room, to do what, only they know… You already condemned that boy, isn’t that enough? The boy is arrested. Now, the biggest madness here, you want death, wish, see my brother dead. Like this? How cruel is all this?” he complained.

“My father is over 70 years old. My mother is over 60 years old. You don’t have a family, do you? These pages that continue to spread these things. May God have mercy on your lives.”

In prison since January 2023, Daniel Alves was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison on February 22 this year. The final sentence was mitigated thanks to the payment of 150 thousand euros (equivalent to R$ 800 thousand) to the victim of the sexual crime. The right-back’s defense has said he will appeal.
