The pandemic has become a milestone in many people’s lives, and with Dan Miranda, singer of Ara Ketu, one of Bahia’s most traditional bands, would be no different. It was during the period of isolation that the 47-year-old singer found the courage to realize a desire that he had put aside: to study.

Today the artist combines an established career in music with law schoolthe area he fell in love with.

“Every time I tried to do something, whether it was law or any other profession, there was always something that drew me to music. Time passed and I ended up not doing it. But I always wanted to do it. I was very encouraged , especially because of my forensic vocation”, he explains.

Between the encouragement of family members in the profession and enrolling in college, not much time passed. In the second half of 2022, when the pandemic had already subsided, she began studying at a private college in the capital of Bahia.

Four semesters later, Dan is proud to say he has managed to manage both passions. The routine is rigorous, but it is not an obstacle.

“I study in person and go there all week, in the morning, but it’s really complicated. There are rehearsals, commitments with the band, in addition to normal life, taking the child to school, picking up, taking care of the house, wash the car. We adapt here and there,” he explains.

When he needs to travel with the band, Dan relies on the help of his classmates and teachers to stay on top of his subjects. “They understand my profession and always help me find a way to avoid losing my vote,” he adds.

“If I didn’t have help I wouldn’t be successful”

Dan Miranda even credits this support network for his success in college. After the Carnival marathon, for example, he took a break from his commitments, but the lessons began. His classmates who updated him on his subjects.

“They ‘looked after’ me a lot, they helped me and I believe that if I didn’t have that help I wouldn’t have been as successful on the course, it’s a support network,” he rejoices.

However, this was not always the case. In an interview with Earth, Dan recalls that his colleagues were embarrassed to talk to him at the beginning of the course. His more than three-decade career as a singer and songwriter, as well as being the face of Ara Ketu, seems to have intimidated other students at the college.

This shyness ceased to exist only in the second half of the year and many admitted to feeling embarrassed when talking to the artist.

“Some people joke that they really liked ‘Ziriguidum,’ and it’s gratifying to be able to have it in college,” he jokes, referring to the success that marked his time in the band Filhos de Jorge, before taking the helm of Ara Ketu.

With the “review” atmosphere in the classroom, Dan Miranda is even called upon to “give a talk” at parties among his colleagues and at events at the educational institution itself. He exults: “It’s a privilege to participate and know that we are invited because they like our work.”

And after college?

Dan Miranda avoids making plans for when he finishes law school. He leaves open his possibilities as a lawyer or public official, but under no circumstances does he think of leaving music.

Until then, he says he’s happy with the ability to meet his learning needs with something he really enjoys. In particular the subjects of Commercial Law and Civil Law.

“It’s a very broad range and it also makes us understand our place in society,” he emphasizes. “It’s a profession that I really like, it’s a topic that interests me due to the various areas it covers.”

New projects

After the Carnival marathon, Dan Miranda and Ara Ketu travel again at the end of March for a show in Minas Gerais. To the Earth, the singer reveals that the band is preparing to release new songs and works, as well as a show at a festival in Portugal. The band will take the stage at BR Fest on July 13th in Figueira da Foz.

Regarding his studies during the trip, Dan plans and jokes, “I’ll have to take more virtual classes in college.”
