Scenic objects for collectors fetch millions of reais at auction houses; the real shipwreck menu from 1912 sold for almost R$500,000

Remember the door that actress Kate Winslet clings to at the end of Titanic to free her character Rose from death? Could the one that everyone already knows have also saved the beloved Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio? So it is! It sold for the equivalent of millions of reais in an online auction.

The spectacular object was announced on Heritage Auctions, a site specializing in auctions of collectibles, and sold this Monday 25th for 718,750 dollars (approximately R$ 3.5 million at the current price). The piece continues to be advertised on the portal, with a new selling price automatically adjusted.

According to the website, the object is not actually a door, but rather an ornate structure that framed the front door of the first class lounge. After the shipwreck in the film, Rose served as floating wreckage to hold on to until a boat arrived.

Other items up for auction

Almost 200 items from the film have already been sold on the portal, including Jack’s emblematic costume (60,000 dollars). One of Rose’s many dresses sold for $118,750. And other items, such as an ornate wood panel destroyed by the viewing vessel ($125,000) and even an entire lifeboat ($15,360), are also part of the sales list.

At the end of 2023, a real menu from the real Titanic, from 1912, was auctioned at another auction house, Henry Aldridge & Son. The rare menu from the ship’s first-class restaurant was sold for the equivalent of R$ 498,000 and probably belonged to a victim of the shipwreck, according to the institution.
