Surfer Gabriel Medina’s stepfather, Charles Saldanha, has returned to accompany his stepson in competitions years after a family row that forced the three-time world champion to cut ties with Saldanha and his mother Simone.

In a video posted on Medina’s social media, Charles appears alongside the surfer during the Bells Beach stop in Australia on the World Surfing Tour. Before the fight, Charles worked as Gabriel’s coach, but he no longer holds that role.

Medina’s current trainer is Australian Andy King, who has been with the champion since the start of the family feud. Andy and Charles appear together in the video published on social media.

The expectation is that Charles will continue to accompany Medina to Margaret River, the next stop on the World Tour in Australia. Subsequently, Charles will have to accompany Sophia Medina, Gabriel’s sister, who will compete in the Challenger Series on the Gold Coast, also in Australia.

The family quarrel between Gabriel Medina, Charles and Simone did not affect the surfer’s relationship with his siblings, Sophia and Felipe, with whom he maintained contact during this period.

Family fight

Gabriel Medina cut ties with his mother and stepfather during his relationship with Yasmin Brunet, which lasted about two years, between 2020 and 2022. The reason would be financial, as the surfer was annoyed by the way his mother handled his his money.

Medina has taken time off from the 2022 World Tour to look after his physical and mental health, following the family split. In recent months he has reconnected with his family and, earlier this month, Simone celebrated reconnecting with her son after Gabriel won a place at the Paris Olympics.
