The actor and former American football player OJ Simpson He died at the age of 76, on Wednesday the 10th, due to cancer. The death of one of the NFL’s most important stars was announced on his social media by his family.

“On April 10, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this period of transition, his family asks that you respect his wishes for privacy and grace,” reads the statement signed by the Simpson family, published on OJ’s profile on X (formerly Twitter).

The former athlete has had a controversial history throughout his life. Simpson was married to model Nicole Brown, with whom he had two of his four children. The couple’s relationship was marked by jealousy and violence towards his wife, and culminated in their separation in 1992. In 1994, Nicole was found dead in her home, along with her friend Ronald Goldman. OJ was named as the prime suspect.

The police investigation gathered several clues that the actor was guilty of the murders, however he was acquitted on October 3, 1995. During the trial, lawyers and a California judge said that the arguments used to incriminate him were of limited racist. The case is considered one of the most publicized in the United States.

Years later, in 2008, Simpson was arrested for armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel-casino. At the time he claimed that he was trying to prevent the sale of his sporting goods and items from his personal collection. The former athlete was sentenced to 33 years in prison, but was eligible to apply for parole for good behavior after serving approximately nine years in prison.
