Two of Globo’s biggest stars are away from the network for similar reasons

Regina Duarte’s resume is impressive. The actress starred in the only soap opera to have achieved 100% ratings in an episode. She was “Selva de Pedra” in 1972.

Lucélia Santos has the merit of playing the protagonist of ‘Escrava Isaura’, from 1976, the greatest international success in the history of Brazilian television fiction.

The two actresses have made a valuable contribution to the consolidation of Globo as the best television channel in the country. Chosen as heroines in series, they starred in other successes with audiences and critics.

It is impossible to forget Regina in the role of Viúva Porcina in ‘Roque Santeiro’, Maria do Carmo in ‘A Rainha da Sucata’ and the three times in which she played Helenas by the author Manoel Carlos (“História de Amor”, ‘Por Amor’ and ‘Páginas da Vita’).

In Lucélia’s type gallery there are Fernanda from ‘Locomotivas’, Carolina from ‘Guerra dos Sexos’, Silvana from ‘Vereda Tropical’, Janete from ‘Água Viva’ and Maria das Graças from ‘Sinhá Moça’.

Despite the positive story, the actresses no longer received invitations from Globo for a similar reason: their strong work in defense of uncomfortable issues. On opposite sides of the ideological spectrum, they pay a high price for their activism.

In the 1980s, at the height of her popularity, Lucélia participated in acts in favor of agrarian reform and went into the hinterland of Acre to protest together with rubber tapper leader Chico Mendes against the devastation of the Amazon rainforest. Back then, the fight for the environment was not regarded as highly as it is today.

Furthermore, she was one of the artists actually involved in Lula’s first presidential campaigns. In the television sector you fought for better working conditions for actors and technicians, causing irritation among channel directors and soap opera writers.

From the 90s onwards she was only called for small roles and had only one regular role in Globo, Doctor Jackeline in the eighth season of ‘Malhação’. Even with her career damaged, she maintained her dedication to the left.

He did not bow his head before the powerful Globe, linked to center-right thinking and a supporter of the military dictatorship at the time of the events. In a recent interview with journalist Hildegard Angel, on TV channel 247, the actress said that the channel’s antipathy towards her was “fundamentally due to a political issue”.

Without invitations from the broadcaster where she made her debut at the age of 21, Lucélia worked sporadically in fiction productions at SBT, Record and RedeTV. In Portugal you made a soap opera on TVI.

However, Regina Duarte finds herself in the same limbo for having unconditionally supported former president Jair Bolsonaro and issues dear to the right and far right, such as the absolute freedom to demonstrate on social media and the fight against communism.

The former supporter of the Tucanos (PSDB politicians), who caused a stir when she said “I fear fear” while imagining Lula’s victory in the 2002 elections, has terminated her contract with Globo after 50 years as Culture Secretary in the Bolsonaro government. She spent 77 days in office.

Rejected by most of her peers in the art world, Brazil’s ex-girlfriend began to see her image shunned by Globo. She was not invited to the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of Brazilian soap operas and she appears little in advertising for Viva reruns and old plots available on Globoplay.

In Lucélia Santos, 66, and Regina Duarte, 77, we find unique talents for dramatic art. The video lacks the magnetic presence of the two. Interestingly, they performed together only once, in 1979.
