Rinaldo Gianecchini51, revealed that he had been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Guillain Barré syndrome, during his trials for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical. The information was shared by him on the Poddelas podcast, Tuesday 11th.

“I developed an autoimmune disease during rehearsals, which paralyzed my hands and legs,” he says. And he explains how the disease attacks the body: “Your own immune system attacks the nerves and paralyzes you. I discovered why everything was starting to tingle, I thought it was psychological. Until one day I couldn’t get out of bed. Then I went to hospital.”



Gianecchini explained that he stopped trying for a short period, but returned as soon as possible, still undergoing physiotherapy, three times a day. According to the Ministry of Health, Guillain Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disease that “is generally caused by a previous infectious process and manifests muscle weakness, with reduction or absence of reflexes.”

The actor also revealed his opinion on his character’s prejudices during the podcast Priscillaand the lack of support for the cause: “There are people within the LGBT community who are not welcoming […] I even felt attacked,” he said, adding that it was part of the acronym because he was pansexual.

“I didn’t think about giving up, but the discomfort is so great in facing your fears, that there is a part of you that wants to escape,” Gianecchini also said, about his role.

The actor’s play premiered on the 7th at the Bradesco Theater in Sao Paulo. It is directed by Mariano Detry and based on the film of the same title released in 1994. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical tells the story of two drag queens and a transgender woman hired to do a show in the middle of the Australian desert. When asked what made him accept the role of drag queen Priscillahe explained: “Music in general ran through me […] And I started to enter this world, and it hit me in a certain way. After the pandemic, I wanted to try new things and stop making soap operas.”

“It made me want to do shorter things. [Por exemplo], Good morning Veronica I recorded it in two months,” he added, speaking about the successful adaptation of the novel of the same name by Ilana Casoy and Raphael Montes for Netflix, in which he played the character Matias Cordeiro.

Gianecchini also spoke about his cancer diagnosis, a disease from which he recovered in 2012. “When the disease arrived I had to stop everything. I focused on recovering my health. It was a wonderful experience, really. Because I knew I was I will learn many things, I have always seen a very beautiful side. We understand the mysteries of life”, he concludes.
