The presenter Silvio Santos, who died in the early hours of this Saturday 17, at the age of 93, had already served in the Army at the Paratroopers School in the Deodoro neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, together with the artist Tony Tornado. The information is from the newspaper The globe.

This happened in 1948, when both were still using their names: Senor Abravanel for Silvio Santos and Antônio Viana Gomes for Tony Tornado. Years later, they achieved fame, with Tony standing out as a singer and actor, while Silvio became one of the icons of Brazilian television.
Tony also paid tribute to his friend earlier, sharing a message on his Instagram account. “Sadness has hit here… Brazil loses a reference and I lose a lifelong friend… So much history together, Don… Rest in peace, Abravanel. A kiss in the heart… and in the soul,” he said.
The former federal capital, Rio de Janeiro, was the hometown of Silvio, who had already completed his accounting course. Tony Tornado, in turn, adopted Rio as his home after running away from Mirante do Paranapanema (SP) at the age of 12. In search of a better life, he arrived in the city without a fixed abode and supported himself with small jobs.
Known at the time as “recruit Abravanel”, despite having good performances in the jump, Silvio Santos did not seem very interested in pursuing a military career. While still in the barracks, he took advantage of Sundays to work at Rádio Mauá, following the program of Silveira Lima, and also found time to open the cafeteria of the parachuting school. These first steps in the radio were the beginning of a path that would lead him to television.
Tony Tornado, on the other hand, remained in the army for several years. In the 1950s, he participated in a mission in Egypt on the Suez Canal. He later moved to the United States, where he lived through tumultuous years. In 1970, Tornado achieved great recognition by winning the V International Song Festival with the soul song “BR-3”.
