Jewish family tradition

His faith follows a family tradition that dates back long before his birth. In the 1980s, Silvio even told in one of his auditorium programs the origin of his registered name, Senor Abravanel. The communicator revealed that he was a direct descendant of Dom Isaac Abravanel, an influential 15th-century Jew.

“The man who gave birth to me arranged the finances of Portugal, then he was called by the Catholic kings, Isabel and Fernando, to Spain. He was Dom Isaac Abravanel. Then, when the Inquisition came, the Catholic kings said: ‘you stay and the Jews, the people, go away.’ He said: ‘no, the Jews go and I go with them,'” he said at the time, emotional.

“And he went to Thessaloniki, Greece. From there then my father, my grandfather, they had the title of Senor Dom Abravanel. Here in Brazil there is no Dom. the title that my ancestors acquired in the 1400s and 90s and so on. Dom Isaac Abravanel was one of those who gave the money for Columbus to come and discover America, so they told my father that “Dom is freshness” and he said Senor, Senor means “Dom Abravanel”, he said.

Evangelical wife and daughters

Despite being Jewish, Silvio Santos did not impose religion on his daughters, who preferred to follow in the footsteps of their mother, Íris Abravanel. In 2012, in an interview with the magazine Isto É, the communicator’s wife said she had become an evangelical because of her relationship with her employees in the 1990s.

“We took him to the hospital. Everyone was like, ‘Wow, this man is very strong.’ And then, at night, we put nurses there, against his will, because he doesn’t like to depend on this care. But we put nurses to take care of him and we installed a baby monitor so we could monitor him. We were able to witness such a beautiful prayer, both in Hebrew and Portuguese, thanking him for 90 years well lived,” Daniela revealed.
