The lonely king: Roberto Carlos lives far from his relatives and suffers the pain of several deaths

The singer seems to find in contact with the fans of the shows an antidote to his routine away from the people he loves

Approaching the age of 84, Roberto Carlos is experiencing one of the most challenging periods of his career. He took advantage of his good health to tour Brazil, the United States and Europe with always crowded concerts.

Many people wonder: why is the country’s most successful singer still working so hard? The answer could be loneliness. The crowd artist seems to want to be alone less and less in his triplex penthouse in Rio.

Roberto Carlos lives only in the company of his employees. The eldest son, Rafael, 57, lives with his wife and two children in Sao Paulo. Daughter Luciana, 54, lives with her husband and daughters in London, England. The artist’s brothers – Carlos Alberto and Norma – also live far from him.

Many relatives have already died. Among these, his children Ana Paula (in 2011) and Dudu Braga (2021), his brother Lauro (2021) and his niece Ana Luiza (2016). The list of deceased friends is equally extensive. It includes producer Suzana Lamounier de Moura (2024), successful partner Erasmo Carlos (2022), faithful secretary Carminha (2023) and advisor Ivone Kassu (2012).

Every day Roberto Carlos moves from his apartment to his studio, less than 10 minutes away by car. He rarely leaves his neighborhood, Urca. You don’t see it in restaurants, parties or other famous people’s homes. His rare vacation days are usually in Miami, where he owns a luxury property. But he has never been caught “roaming” in the region.

He is a hostage of fame. It cannot go unnoticed. Avoid public places to avoid crowds. So, self-isolation. Last year he said he had a new girlfriend. Truth or joke? The press hasn’t found out yet. Roberto Carlos is one of the few celebrities who manage to completely protect their privacy.

Being on stage, in front of hundreds and even thousands of fans at every show, seems to be the singer’s way of minimizing the loneliness and pain of so many consecutive deaths. After all, there is no point in being a billionaire without having affection and human warmth around you.
