The former tennis player Serena Williamsone of the greatest athletes of all time, shared with her followers on social media that she recently underwent surgery to remove an impressively large gill cyst. According to Serena herself, the cyst, which is a type of congenital benign tumor, was the size of a grapefruit and caused her discomfort, forcing her to be admitted to hospital to have its contents drained.

In a video posted to TikTok, the winner of 23 Grand Slam titles and four Olympic gold medals described the shock she felt when she discovered the mass on her neck in May this year. “One day in May I felt this large mass on my neck. I was mortified, I did every test imaginable and everything came back negative,” Serena said.

After tests, doctors identified that it was a branchial cyst, which was removed with surgery.

“It was so big it was the size of a grapefruit and when it came out it hurt,” the former athlete explained. Although the pain was bearable, the process involved installing a drain due to the large amount of fluid in the area. “I’m very happy to have had good doctors. I’m still a little scared, but excited for the next steps,” added Serena, who was still in the hospital when she recorded the video.

@serena In May I found a lump on my neck. I immediately went to the doctor, had an MRI and was told I had a brachial cyst. Have you ever heard of it? They said I don’t need to remove it if I don’t want to. So I didn’t get it but it continued to grow. I decided to do more tests and 3 tests and a biopsy later, everything is still negative, but the doctors advised me to remove it as soon as possible because it was the size of a small grapefruit and could get infected or worse, leak fluid. So I’m the one who removes it. I feel so grateful and lucky that everything worked out and, most importantly, that I am healthy. I still made it to American Doll with Olympia as promised. And yes, everything is fine. 🙏🏿🙏🏿 #fyp #foryourpage #serenawilliams #mom ♬ original sound – Serenawilliams

Despite the shock and discomfort caused by the surgery, Serena showed good spirits when she left the hospital and, shortly after, showed up at an American Doll store, a brand of dolls, with her eldest daughter, Olympia, seven. years. “We’re at the American Doll, right, Olympia? Mommy’s in pain, but Mommy needs to keep showing up,” joked the former tennis player, demonstrating resilience and determination, characteristics that have marked her sporting career.
