The presenter and actress Sabrina Sato announced, this Wednesday the 6th, that she lost the first child she was expecting with actor Nicolas Prattes. At 43 years old, Sabrina was 11 weeks pregnant and had a miscarriage. due to failure of the pregnancy to progress. She had been hospitalized at the Israeli Albert Einstein Hospital since Tuesday the 5th.

Although in recent years the number of women who, like Sabrina, become pregnant after the age of 40 has increased, Experts point out that a late pregnancy can be considered risky.

Maria Virgínia de Oliveira, gynecologist, obstetrician and lecturer at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santos (SP), explains that older women are more likely to suffer a miscarriage. According to her, the main cause is chromosomopathy, that is, a chromosomal anomaly that can affect the development of the fetus.

“The main cause of miscarriages is chromosomal disorders, which are chromosomal changes. And age is a relational factor because the older the age, the older the woman’s egg. So, in addition to the low chance of getting pregnant, there is also a higher chance of having these chromosomal changes and, probably, miscarriage up to the 12th week of pregnancy,” says the doctor.

This is demonstrated by the data published in 2021 by the National Abortion Survey (PNA). in Brazil one in seven women aged close to 40 has undergone at least one abortion.

Master of gynecology and professor Guilherme Karam, of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Metropolitan University of Santos (SP), states that, in the first trimester of pregnancy (up to 12 weeks), there is a higher incidence of miscarriages.

“The first trimester is the phase in which 90% of abortions occur. And the risk is normally between 20% and 25% in pregnancies diagnosed with genetic alterations. In other words, a quarter of the female population tends to experience pregnancy loss during this period,” she reports.

If Sabrina wants to get pregnant again, experts clarify that, after uterine emptying, if no type of procedure is planned, it is recommended to wait up to two menstrual cycles.

“If it happened spontaneously and no type of procedure such as curettage was necessary, the endometrium must reconstruct itself so that there are no contraindications in the new attempt,” reveals Maria Virginia.

“After two normal menstrual cycles, the woman could, in theory, try to get pregnant again and the risks would be those common to any pregnancy,” explains Karam.
