The Portuguese court condemns a woman for racism against the children of Giovanna Ewbank and Bruno Gagliasso

The couple celebrated the victory: ‘Historical conviction’; remember the case, which happened in 2022

The Justice of Portugal sentenced to eight months in prison Adelia Barros59 years, in case of racism against Titi AND Blesschildren of the actors Giovanna Ewbank AND Bruno Gagliasso. The case occurred in July 2022, when the family was on holiday in the European country. The sentence was recognized on Friday the 15th by the Almada Court, according to the newspaper Public.

Adélia will serve her sentence in freedom, provided that there is no recurrence of the crime for four years. Furthermore, a fine of 2,500 euros (approximately R$15,300) was ordered to the organization SOS Racismo and compensation of 14,000 euros (R$85,700) to the children.

In a joint post on Instagram, Giovanna and Bruno celebrated the sentence. “Almost three months ago we celebrated a victory against racism in Brazil. And today, directly from Salvador, in this month that asks us to be aware of the heritage of slavery we have inherited, we return to publicize another victory against racism, this time in Portugal,” they wrote.

The post references another instance of racism faced by the family. In August this year, the Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro convicted socialite Day McCarthy, who had made racist statements against Titi in 2017, when the couple’s daughter was just four years old. Day was sentenced to 8 years, 9 months and 13 days in closed prison.

The text continues: “As we have already said, but we need to repeat it: we know that this victory happens because we have visibility and because we are white. We know that we are listened to more than any black mother or father who is still silenced. We know it. And not we can stop, especially if our privilege makes a difference in a fight. This is our role, this is the role of white people.

“Racism gives no respite, but today it seems to provide a respite with yet another historic conviction. It is the first time that Portuguese law condemns a person due to racism. The woman who attacked our children – who are children – is was sentenced to eight months in prison (…). Once again we are moved, once again we are grateful for the public agitation, the Brazilian press and our Portuguese friends and once again we must say that we must remain vigilant because racism continues, continues to decrease, hurting, killing. And we cannot weaken before him”, concluded Giovanna and Bruno.

Remember the case

In the racist incident that occurred on July 30, 2022, the acting couple were with their children in a restaurant when Adélia Barros insulted the children and a family of Angolan tourists who were there, calling them “dirty blacks”.

At the time, a video showing Giovanna confronting the woman went viral on social media and the family received messages of support.

The couple’s press office then released an official statement, describing the incident in detail: “A white woman, who was passing in front of the restaurant, deliberately cursed not only Titi and Bless, but also a family of Angolan tourists who were present on site – around 15 black people. The criminal asked them to leave the restaurant and go back to Africa, among other nonsense said to the children, such as “dirty blacks”. Brazil, which Giovanna reacted by confronting the woman, while Bruno Gagliasso, her husband, called the police”, reads the text.

The actors called the police and the woman was arrested. However, she was arrested for insulting the Republican National Guard (GNR) police, but was later released. Giovanna and Bruno filed a formal complaint with the Portuguese police headquarters.

During the trial, the defense argued that Adélia was drunk at the time and did not remember anything.

The next day, the actors gave an interview to Fantasticin which they reflected on the difficulty of blacks defending themselves from whites. “I don’t think she ever expected a white woman to fight her like I did, like that. I know that, as a white woman, by going there to confront her, my point will be validated. I won’t date the crazy one, that angry, as happens to many other black mothers, who are lionesses every day, just like I was in this episode”, observed Giovanna.

She said it was very cruel to think that Titi and Bless, then aged 9 and 7, should already “be prepared to fight racism”. “They are two children who should live without thinking about anything at all,” he added.
