The singer and performer Neguinho from Beija-Flor announced his retirement this Wednesday the 20th.

After fifty years at the helm of the samba school of Nilópolis, in the Baixada Fluminense, the 75-year-old samba singer’s last carnival will be in 2025.

Luiz Antônio Feliciano Marcondes, the singer’s given name, commanded Beija-Flor 14 titles from school – the last one was in 2018 – and has received the awards six times Golden Tamborim Trophy AND Golden flags.

Born in Nova Iguaçu (RJ), he debuted as a samba player in the Leão de Iguaçu neighborhood in 1970. Five years later, he joined Beija-Flor de Nilópolis and began adopting the school’s name after himself.

At school, Neguinho created the slogan Look at Beija-Flor there, guys!considered the most famous war cry of the carnival.

In addition to being a samba dancer for Beija-Flor, the singer has a career with 27 discs released. It has also been the subject of four samba schools: Unidos de Manguinhos in 1991; Independentes de Cordovil in 1992 and Leão de Nova Iguaçu e Juventude Imperial in 2010.

The 2025 parade will be marked by an even more special emotion. In addition to paying homage to the unforgettable maestro Laíla, it will also be the time to professionally say goodbye to our greatest and unparalleled voice at the official microphone: Luiz Antônio Feliciano Marcondes, our Neguinho.

On June 11, 1975, the then well-known “Neguinho da Vala” arrived in Nilópolis, at the invitation of our honorary president, Anísio Abraão David, who was also responsible for suggesting the artistic name that became eternal: “Neguinho da Beija-Flor” . Since then, his voice has echoed in every verse we have sung, in every victory we have celebrated and in every 10 that has made us vibrate. Now, after five decades of dedication to Beija-Flor, she has decided to end her professional journey in the same year in which we pay homage to the legacy of her great friend Laíla.

This farewell, however, is only for the role of official interpreter. Neguinho is, and always will be, the essence of Beija-Flor. There is no Beija-Flor without him. Your story is engraved in our colors, in our sambas and in our hearts.

The next Beija-Flor Carnival, therefore, will have an even more special flavor: it will be the celebration of a life dedicated to samba. We will, once again, witness his greatness, celebrating together a trajectory that spans more than 50 years, 14 titles, 6 Golden Banners and a war cry that will forever echo in the Brazilian Carnival.

We thank you for every moment, every note and every emotion that Neguinho gave us. If we are this “community that commands respect and beats our chest”, it is because he has always been at our side, building this history.

Hi Neguinho, look at our Beija-Flor there, people!
