Under pressure on the eve of COP-30, the president defends Ibama’s license and suggests using Equatorial Rim oil money in the energy transition
SPECIAL ENVY FOR JAKARTA – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared on Friday 24th that he believes it is very easy to preach the end of fossil fuels, but that currently no country is able to “get rid of them”. The declaration contradicts global decisions on climate, on the eve of COP-30, which will be held in Belém (PA).
“It is very easy to say the end of fossil fuels, but it is difficult for us to say who today has the means to free themselves from fossil fuels. Nobody does it,” said Lula, in an interview in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, where he received support and commitment from the local government with contributions to the Tropical Forests Forever Fundwhich will be launched at COP-30.
“We are doing the things that need to be done correctly and we will continue to invest in renewable energy, we will continue to use money so that we can increasingly create the conditions for Brazil to free itself from fossil fuels. But as long as the world needs it, Brazil will not throw away the wealth that can improve the lives of the Brazilian people.”
The PT member was asked about the contradiction between hosting COP-30, in Belém (PA), a United Nations climate conference where countries agreed to abandon the use of fossil energy sources, and seeking to explore new oil reserves in Brazil.
Petrobras has just received approval from Ibama to begin exploration and drilling in the equatorial margin, Foz do Amazonas, a reserve estimated at at least 6 billion barrels. The authorization received the political approval of the president, despite criticism from environmentalists, and opposition from ministers Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy) and Navy (Silva).
“We want to work so that we can reduce the use of fossil fuels, one of the ways I said is that we must use oil money to consolidate the so-called energy transition,” Lula said.
The president also said that Brazil will tell the world at COP-30 that it is “one of the countries that has the largest amount of renewable energy on planet Earth.” The PT member mentioned the mixture of 30% ethanol in petrol and 20% biodiesel in diesel.
“We got permission to do research on the Equatorial Rim. Between the research and the availability of oil it takes a long time, because you need a new license to be able to do things in a company that has experience. There is no history of oil spills by Petrobras,” Lula said, although the company has a record of cases on the Brazilian coast, according to company reports. “It is perhaps the company with the most experience in prospecting for oil in deep water without any damage.”
The president explained that the state company still needs the money from the sale of oil, but that in the future it will become a company focused on other types of energy.
