The national president of the Workers’ Party (PT), Gleisi Hoffmannreacted with indignation to the statements of the singer and funk influencer Jojo Todynhowho stated that he had received a proposal of R$ 1.5 million to support Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 presidential elections. Gleisi classified the accusations as a “blatant lie” and announced that the party will undertake a legal action against Jojo.

In an interview with the Brasil Paralelo channel, Jojo said that the invitation came via a lunch during which the value would be presented. “They called, they scheduled a lunch, they said it was a job and when I arrived that was it. They offered me R$1.5 million for the campaign. And I said: ‘Sorry, guys, it’s not going to happen.’ “he said.

Jojo, a supporter of former president Jair Bolsonaro, also said other artists received payments to participate in Lula’s campaign. “All the artists who did political campaigns made money,” he said, without providing evidence.

Hours after the video of Jojo’s interview with the Brasil Paralelo channel circulated on social media, Gleisi took to his digital platforms to refute the accusation. “It’s a blatant lie. No offers were made to Jojo or any other artists. He will have to answer for this in court,” he said.

Gleisi also attributed the statements to an attempt to distract public opinion from the indictment of former president Jair Bolsonaro, accused by the Federal Police of planning a coup. “These far-right networks are discussing this issue to divert attention from the prosecution of Bolsonaro and his criminal organization. But they won’t make it.”

In addition to Gleisi’s statements, the PT released an official note in which it denies that Lula’s campaign has made proposals for paid participation to Jojo Todynho or other influencers. The text describes the accusations as unfounded and underlines that they are attempts to weaken the party.

“President Lula’s electoral campaign never made any proposal for paid participation for the singer or other artists. The fake news was spread on a far-right platform at a time when Bolsonaro and his allies are facing serious charges.”

The Brasil da Esperança Coalition, made up of PT, PCdoB and PV, has announced that it will file a civil action for damages against Jojo Todynho, claiming that the statements are defamatory and harmful to the party’s reputation.
