This week, the actress Maria Casadevall she told her followers that she underwent surgery after being diagnosed with Eagle Syndrome. He performed the operation as indicated for treatment and promised to provide more details on the diagnosis soon. But do you know this disease? To understand each other better, we spoke to the neurosurgeon specialized in the treatment of diseases of the brain, spine and chronic pain, Guglielmo Rossoni.

What is eagle syndrome?

According to the professional, the syndrome is a rare condition “happens when a neck bone becomes larger than normal or is in a position that irritates nearby structures, such as nerves and blood vessels”. This scenario can cause pain in the neck, jaw, throat, and even the sensation of something “stuck” in the throat, as well as some other symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or headaches.

How can it be detected?

Rossoni explains that the disease can be detected during a medical examination with an otolaryngologist or neurologist. During the evaluation, the specialist may request x-rays, tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. “These imaging tests show the size and location of the styloid process, which is a larger-than-normal bony process, and help understand what is causing the symptoms,” detailed.

How is the treatment? Is there a cure?

It is possible to cure Eagle syndrome depending on the severity of the symptoms. Medication is used to help the patient deal with the pain, and in somewhat more frequent cases, surgery may be indicated.

“In milder cases, medications may be used to relieve pain or inflammation, such as analgesics and anti-inflammatories. In more severe cases, where symptoms are persistent and interfere with quality of life, surgery may be necessary to reduce or correct the size of the styloid process. This surgery, which is a minimally invasive process, usually resolves the problem and eliminates symptoms.”the doctor explained.

If you don’t treat it, could there be any risk or progression to a more serious condition?

Rossoni says yes, the pain can become even more intense: “In some cases, depending on the location of the styloid process, pressure on important blood vessels may occur, which can lead to circulatory problems. With these symptoms, the patient’s quality of life may be significantly impaired due to chronic pain and discomfort. For this reason it is essential to contact your doctor as soon as symptoms appear, so that treatment can begin as soon as possible.”
