Why the French press ignores the disappearance of a Brazilian photographer

Almost a week after the disappearance of Flávio de Castro Sousa from Minas Gerais, no major French media highlighted the case.

The explanation is surprising: around 200 people disappear every day in France, almost the same rate as in Brazil, which has a population three times larger. The data was published by the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’. The Brazilian photographer broke off contact hours before the flight that would have taken him back to Brazil.

According to the group Assistance et Recherche de Personnes Disparues (Assistance and search for missing persons), every year 70,000 men and women disappear on French territory, of which 50,000 are minors. Of the total, approximately 1,000 cases are never solved.

As they say in Brazil, Flávio is yet another statistic. Brazilian influencers living in France posted videos on social media with information about the case and called for the mobilization of immigrants. For now the mystery continues.

Another reason for the lack of attention to the Brazilian’s disappearance is that French journalism is almost entirely focused on the crisis of President Emmanuel Macron’s government. Its prime minister, Michel Barnier, could receive a motion of censure in the National Assembly and be forced from office.
